Noel,
At how many events will you ever see three Roland Space Echo units? I'm sorry ours got crossed in the mix. Your crew was fine - just keep at it. Play well at times- play not so well at times - but play.
J Mo'

noel.....isn't it amazing how you tell yourself to calm down and the shakes just get worse? it's happened to me many times, including playing at the instro summit last spring. congrats on your first gig.

I may have missed this, so my appologies if you've already said it, but are you calling yourselves?

You look pretty hot, Noel!

The closest we ever got to a name was The Poconoans. This is the group considering becoming a real jazz-fusion funk combo. Al will be in charge of that project.

I was told by Jeff Green I was wearing a Fireballs shirt, not a Ventures shirt. So the first song Jeff's band (The Pickniks) played was a Fireballs song. Coincidence? I don't think so! (Well, probably, but it was fun.)

The Fireballs are my favorite band! You can't go wrong with that shirt!

Your hair is looking HOT, Noel! Suits you a hell of a lot better than the "bald old man" look. Big Grin

Thanks for this thread, Noel. You and your entire family are a true inspiration to all of us.

IMO.

Found out last night that our five-piece combo will continue, with the goal of developing the jazz-fusion funk idea into something we play out. Alan agrees we should add percussion (bongos, congas, etc.) and see how far we can take it. It's not surf/instro, but it's now almost officially a band. Alan has to convince the others to commit to it, and then we'll see just how much we can do with it. We're already going to bring a set of it to next year's Fan Fest, so that's one confirmed date!

The "Ventures never recorded a Beach Boys album but should have, so we will" project really took off. I told Bob Spalding about it AFTER we played, and he asked to be part of it as long as he can play Sloop John B and 409. A "real" band also wants to be part of it. All-together, there are enough great musicians who want to do this with me that it can be something extraordinary. I really didn't expect this level of acceptance of the concept, especially after I played.

I'm a little intimidated. This is way more ambitious that my original concept. But I like it. I have a lot of work to do. The next 12 months are going be very busy.

I know a lot of you were surprised that I don't really play as well as you expected me to. I sure didn't play as well on Saturday as I had played the day before, either. Still though, I'm really not very good, but I'm just getting started.

And, I've started this...
The project to play Beach Boys songs as The Ventures might have is officially part of the 2014 Ventures East Coast Fan Fest. Bob Spalding is playing on Sloop John B and 409. A couple other guitarists have also volunteered to play lead (Thanks Jeff!) or rhythm guitar on some songs. But unless people are willing to play every song, I need an extra drummer, bassist, organist or two, and some extra guitarists for additional lead and rhythm parts.

If you would like to be part of this, and are near enough to Philly for your convenience, please let me know. This will be an extra-special performance. I'd also like it to be good enough to maybe play it at other venues. A version of it could become part of the acoustic surf/instro trio.

Congrats on playing out like that Noel. That's a big milestone that not very many people get to cross.

I want to thanks John (mrmomo) for agreeing to play lead guitar on Ventures-style insto versions of Surfin' U.S.A., Surfer Girl & I Get Around with us at next year's Ventures Fan Fest. Thanks, John! I greatly appreciate it.

And another thank you to Mosrite87 (Mike Waters) for joining up and agreeing to come up all the way from North Carolina to play lead guitar on "Help Me Rhonda", "Fun, Fun, Fun" and "California Girls" PLUS play 12-string on "Sloop John B" at the 2014 Fan Fest.

It'll be great to see Mike again, and wonderful to play these songs with him. Thanks, Mike!

Thanks for posting the videos Noel!Great job! You got out there and did it. I'm so happy for you and look forward to more. Congrats on jumpin in and getting wet.

While I haven't managed to start or join a local surf band (Yet!) I have been able to play music I like with good friends, several times in the last eighteen months. And, plans are already well underway for next year.

Plus, "The Ventures Play The Beach Boys" went over so well among everyone at the Fan fest that I've been asked to turn the concept into an album. Of course I jumped at the opportunity. So, I'm now a record producer! I'm gonna be asking a lot of questions here, so thanks in advance for everyone's advice. Big Grin

I think I'm the most improbable guitarist I know. I'm well over 60 now. I didn't seriously get started until a few years ago. I'm a slow learner who needs a lot of practice to be stage ready. But I'm boundlessly enthusiastic and I don't give up. And, I'm not afraid to ask people to be part of my musical journey.

I mention all this to encourage anyone reading to take a chance and just go for it. You just don't know what wonderful, amazing things can happen if you do.

The most amazing thing about all of this is, none of it would ever have happened without the friendliness, encouragement, support, and even participation of the membership of SG101. Thank you!

But wait... there's more!

SG101!

Noel,
Very inspiring thread, only read the last page and then very first post so far, will read more later when I have time, but to have gone from very little playing experience to playing onstage with Bob Spalding for a Ventures fan fest is pretty damn cool. Also, I don't see the links to the videos, but maybe I haven't dug through the thread enough. Anyways, just wanted to let you know you've inspired me.
