Thanks, Carol. Means a lot. It would love it if you could somehow be in All Summer Long and/or the acoustic trio. Would it be too derivative to call that group The Quiet Tri-Tones? Big Grin

What clothes do you wear to a dress rehearsal?

Maybe capes would be cool Yes

ROTFL With friends like you, I'm a very lucky guy! Yes We ARE trying not to look any sillier than necessary.

But I promise you, and you know who you are, no sandals with socks, no tucked in Hawaiian shirts and no baseball caps. I've let my hair grow so I don't have the drill sergeant look anymore. But none of us are gonna look as good as Dan Moses in that amazing Mooneyes camp shirt. Or play that good either.

IMO.

It's far, far more important to me at this stage that we sound good than have a specific look or anything. If we stink, it won't matter how good we look, and if we play really well, it won't matter how ordinary we look.

I really wish we had managed to get through the set successfully yesterday. Sigh

But seriously, I'm just curious, do you really have dress rehearsals where you wear what you are going to wear onstage? If you do, I think that's pretty awesome.

I actually tried to accomplish that; have two full-dress rehearsals that would be exactly like our performance. We got close, twice, but never played a complete set, not once.

I never thought of it before, this way, but I come from a show-business family. Dad was on stage professionally, full-time, from 1938 until he retired in 1979, and then occasionally until tinnitus in his left ear made it completely impossible for him to play violin any more. Dad died shortly after he had to quit playing. He played violin since 1918.

I guess I learned from Dad that anything left unrehearsed, even down to what you wear, if you stand or sit, who's next to whom, all of it can adversely affect the performance if it isn't tried and worked through before hand, so you can get rid of what doesn't work. I didn't know I was trying to actualize that lesson, or how seriously I'm taking making music, until I read your comment. The ultimate goal is to have fun making music, but falling on your face over something, only tried for the first time in front of an audience, isn't fun. One of us hasn't decided which guitar to play, and another wouldn't rehearse with the guitar he is playing. As far as I know, I'm the only one bringing a backup guitar. I broke a string in rehearsal on Sunday playing my Beatles guitar and learned that lesson right then.

The problem is no one else has the same attitude towards ensuring we do the very best we could have. We will do the very best we can, but it just won't be the best it could have been. I hope it's good enough.

Thanks for your comment and complement. It means an awful lot coming from you.

Me too! I like that attitude, the right look for sure helps getting in the "right" mood (not only on stage).

I'm leaving shortly to head down for the evening's activities. Several of us are arriving separately, due to family and work obligations this evening. One comes in later tonight and two arrive around 11:30 am tomorrow morning. We STILL haven't resolved a couple of transitions between songs left over from Sunday. We may have 30 minutes to go over these things off to the side before we go on... right after lunch. Ah, well. Best laid plans (dry run unplugged tonight) and all.

I have my movie camera charged and packed with a tripod. I hope to show everyone a decent performance early next week.

Thanks, again, to everyone for all your advice, encouragement and support.

Break a leg, Noel! I think this is very cool.
I've been a musician for years and played more gigs than I could ever count.
But, I've never been in a band that played surf music.
Now that I am I feel like I'm starting over again from scratch.
We haven't even finished writing one complete song yet, so our first gig is far, far in the future. But even thinking about it makes me completely nervous.
How exciting! Have fun! Big Grin

Hi everyone! Well, I survived. We survived. I will post the video of our set when I figure out where to host it. I confess I was kinda nervous until Bob Spalding was standing next to me, ready to play our first song with us. Then I got so nervous, I completely forgot to give him his solo! After that, my jitters increased with each clam. I played very far from my best, but didn't freeze or quit, and somehow didn't wreck the set, though that may be subject to debate. You'll hear and see it all. It was a blast!

For me, the most rewarding part is how many great musicians want to participate in the instro Beach Boys project for next-year's Fan Fest, AFTER they heard me play! Later, after we finished, I explained the concept to Bob Spalding. He immediately and enthusiastically said he'd like to be in it if he could play Sloop John B and 409! I'm still flabbergasted, grateful and happy. Amazing!

Lawrence of Arabia was the hit of the set. It caught everyone off-guard and, even with all my mistakes, they all said it was their favorite thing we did. So, the group from Saturday decided to continue the jazz-fusion funk concept with extra songs, including a version of Caravan complete with drum-stick bass guitar solo. It will sound amazing played this way.

I was very surprised at how nervous I got. I really didn't expect it. And I have to work on that if I'm going to be able to play better in public, and not just at home alone.

It sure was fun!

Awesome Noel. Being nervous is normal and from your review you did very well. Inspirational actually for those of us who have yet to face an audience. BRAVO!!!

I am not obsolete, I am RETRO.... Cool

Glad to hear it went well Noel. You are my hero! I still freeze up if anyone comes into my basement while I'm playing. Now that you've got that first gig under your belt it should get a little easier Big Grin

Yes!
Way to go!
A positive experience with what sounds like a lot of normal, minor, every gig issues that most of us encounter.
Noel, this is great news. I'm so happy for you.
