Never, ever say, "The worst is over." ROTFL I thought we'd have recorded ourselves by now, and settled who's in and who's out, but they haven't happened yet. To the wonderful volunteers here who want to help, I'll PM you soon with what's going on, as soon as I actually know.

Everyone should know that Will (Staredge) of The Hula Dragons, and Dick Bascom (drumsdick) of The Aquatudes have volunteered to help me with this project, by laying down bass and drum tracks for us to practice with. Will has even gone so far as to be willing to come up and play with us. I'm speechless with gratitude and can't possibly thank them as well as they deserve. I'm also quite embarrassed that we've struggled to the point we haven't recorded ourselves yet.

But, our arrangements and orchestration are nearly complete, and we're hoping to record ourselves this Thursday. If it turns out even half-decent, I'll upload it here.

As for why I've not been here or on Facebook, too much to tell here, although lots of it is very good. But I did experience a deep crisis of confidence over trying to become a performing guitarist at 61. Suffice it to say, I'm in it all the way and I'll do the very best I can.

You're an inspiration Noel. Keep it up.

I've just read this thread and wanted to say a few things:
1) Well done Noel for getting together with some guys, making a band happen and not quitting at the first deal of bad news! I'm really pleased for you!
2) I have the same finger thing as you, with the little finger curling in. I was told that the pinkie doesn't have it's own tendon, it shares one with the ring finger, which makes individual movement more demanding. The only answer is practice, really.
3) As for solos in songs - why not? If that's what you can do, then do it, and show every one you can do it. You'll inspire someone. And besides, it's always nice when the singing stops for a bit Big Grin

That's the annoying thing... It's like a train crash, because you're supposed to play iron maiden like solos over the vocals, and it becomes a big, muddy mess... I don't know. Starting back up soon, though. I'll keep you posted.

IMO.

Thanks! A lot. One of the reasons I had for starting this topic is because I knew, if I can do it, here in the Poconos & over 60, literally anyone can wherever they are and however they play. All I had to do was forget my age and start acting 15 again. Literally. It was like, "Hey, let's get together and play surf music for fun and maybe learn enough songs to play a show somewhere with a friendly audience and ... " Okay, it actually wasn't that easy. There were plenty of times I thought I'd never find anyone besides a CD to play music along with. And I still have a long way to go to be a decent guitarist. But it did happen, and all of it since I joined SG101 a little over two years ago.

Believe me, I'd be all over the Sierra Surf Music Camp if I were closer; it would have made everything gobs easier and I'd know far more than I do now. But even with all that, it wasn't absolutely necessary. Look what's happened so far! Ventures East Coast Fan Fest this October. Then after that, the All Summer Long project.

The most amazing thing to happen yet is, I just got an invitation to play bass in a real band. Not surf, but with established and brilliant musicians. I don't know what all will come of it, but I was asked. And I said yes! Most of you know what something like this means to anyone who really wants to make music. It means all that to me, too.

If I can, anyone can! And I really do owe all this to everyone here. No matter what comes from all this, I can never thank you all enough. Ever.

Somewhere, my dad is smiling and saying, "See? What took you so long? I knew you could do it."

Congrats Noel! Bass is a blast. Best of luck.

Noel, I have the pinky problem myself and find that placing my thumb in the center of the back of the neck helps me stretch out more. I'm mostly self taught so I may get fussed at for giving bad technique advice but it works for me. I broke my left arm badly around 89 and lost some range of motion, but have gained a lot back by learning guitar. Hang in there and practice all you can Smile

Noel, I just read the whole thread. Because you and I are the same age, I understand. You're ahead of me in playing and I'm happy for you. Us old guys are supposed to be the ones tempered by age so we have patience for the rest of our activities. Big Grin

++1 what wfoguy said! I'm in the same boat (on the same kind of board?) same age bracket and in a surf music wasteland too. Will I ever make it? Don't know and not worried about it, it's just too much fun leaning all this new stuff.
Neil

All I wish I knew what they were talking about

I've STILL been unable to get everyone in the same room together. But we are playing better. No recording yet as we are still THIS CLOSE >< to finishing the arrangements. Bass player says he's in but... hasn't been to a rehearsal yet. At least he's finally going over his parts with our guitar teacher. I have no idea what's actually going to happen in October; none at all.

I am sure of one thing, though. I want to ensure that anyone involved in the All Summer Long project is as committed to it as I am; that it's as much their project as mine. I'm totally surprised this turned from an (almost) old man's lark into a youthful, burning passion.

That's what should drive music: passion. Smile

A very interesting thing happened to our first full-band rehearsal this afternoon. At first I thought no one would come. Then Matt, the bassist agreed. Then Brian, the drummer agreed! The two lead guitars couldn't come, but the entire rhythm section was here!

It was terrific! We made tons of progress and have more than half the set sounding acceptable, which is actually amazing. Not only that, Brian's daughter is a genuine kick-ass drummer and has agreed to come along and help.

I'm VERY encouraged. Steve (2'nd lead guitar) has been resting his arm and hand, not doing any more construction around the house, and hopefully he can play again soon. Alan (1'st lead guitar) is a pro and ought to be very happy with what we've accomplished in 3 hours today. We're rehearsing again this Wednesday evening and again on Sunday. Maybe get some of us together on Fridays as well. And again for the next two weeks. That's all the time there is.

We're performing on Oct 12, so time is running out. I just wish we'd all been doing this for a few months; we'd really have something then. But it looks like we'll do okay.

After this, All Summer Long and the acoustic trio projects begin. Amazing!

Glad to hear it's coming together Noel.
It's a great feeling when it starts to click with a group of players, isn't it?
Awesome news.
You guys are going to be great!

Thanks, Jeff! It was beginning to look like a mess, but not anymore. I'm really amazed the rhythm section did do much today by ourselves. It was a lot of fun.

I want to again thank everyone here for your enthusiasm and support. You mean more to me than I can express. But nothing I'm doing would have happened without you.

But I want to add this. I'm still a poor guitarist. I've only managed to play maybe half of the time since I started taking lessons, and I've nearly started over each year but this one. I have trouble forming certain chord forms and keeping up with fast changes that use them. But I'm doing this now, was invited to play bass in a real band and am starting my other projects in a few weeks.

I've heard more than a few people tell me lately they can't do what I'm doing - that is start a band or play in a band. That's exactly what I thought before I started doing it. I'm being careful not to play beyond my abilities, while I learn to play better, and letting better players play the harder parts so we sound the best we can. They can take all the credit their playing earns them. I'm just having fun and trying to sound as good as possible. If I can do it, anyone can.

You can!

My first post in this topic was on January 10 or this year. Tomorrow we have our first full-band dress rehearsal. We'll do practices in 2's & 3's this week until next Sunday when we have our last full-band rehearsal, and again until we perform on October 12.

I really hope it goes well tomorrow.

You are going to have a great time ! Relax and do what you do ! Take what you got and rock !play through the mistake if you even make one. The passion of your playing will be evident anyway.smile all the way because your hard work and dream of playing is a reality now Noel ! Congrats man !

Thanks, EJ. I seem to recall something about breathing, too. I'll have to remember that.

The music room. It used to be a reading room, but I needed to make room for 4 guitarists and a drummer. Priorities! Big Grin

My guitars for Oct 12; Baritone Strat & Cort Source-BV. The Quilters are loaner demonstrators I take to guitar stores, let musicians play and that we'll use when we play. If anyone is willing to come over, you're welcome to play these amps. One's a MicroPro-200 8" and the other's an Aviator Ultralite Eight. And, yeah, you can crank up the Music Man, too!

My gear. I'm also using a BOSS RE-20 Space Echo.
