Wow dp, good info there. I just bought a RI '63 Fender Reverb Unit that should be arriving in the mail within a few days. Maybe I'll try swapping out those tubes like you talked about. I'll see how it sounds as is, then go from there. Thanks!

dp, thanks for taking the time to make that post. When I eventually get the re-issue i will jam for it a bit and see what i think. I am not as obsessed with getting vintage sound as some people, but I definetly am a fan of quality. |

Stigger108, I've got an original '64 and a reissue. The difference between the two is very slight where the difference between a pedal and any Fender reverb is huge. You'll be just fine and drippy with a stock reissue reverb unit even without making any mods. Rick |

That's a good choice, I think. I bought mine for $250, and I know it's gonna blow my now-obsolete Boss RV-5 out of the water. |

...you can still find the re-issue on ebay for $250-$350 or so... I think the musician's friend still has them...somewhere around $400 or so brand spankin' new... I got the re-ish back in '99 for about $300 (inc. shipping)off of the ebay...it replaced my venerable St. George Reverb Unit that I had been using since 1983...I later sold that St.. George to some lucky-duckie on ebay for about $150...it was still working fine when I packed it up and sent it away...the new owner said he liked it a lot... -dp |

No, they are still in their online catalog: http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0217500000 I changed my tubes out to NOS and it took some of the harshness out. That was probably the 6V6 vs 6K6 effect. Back to the Danelectro Spring King... Does anyone out there use the Spring King? Is it your main 'verb, or your back-up? What are the merits of the pedal? Any known issues or drawbacks? Is it worth the dough (@$150) ? Obviously, from the direction this thread took, the Spring King does not compare to the RI Fender Unit...but, how does the Spring King stand on its own merits... in other words, why would I want to buy one? -dp |

I bought my reissue 63 reverb for $300 on Ebay, used but mint with the cover. I have a Spring King that I bought when they were first released. I was just getting back into guitar at that point and didn't have an amp with reverb. They're good for what they are, and sound better than pretty much any digital pedal. But it still isn't an outboard tube tank. It doesn't have the drip and gets earpiercingly harsh when you try to get a wet tone. I've never tried the Little Lanelei but imagine it's not much different than the Dano, only more expensive. I can't see spending $180 on that one, when a reissue Fender can be had for not much more...used —Shawn Martin |

my 2 cts IF you really want to get into surf music - the spring king is no substitute for a tank and is to expensive as a temporarily solution or a back up ... if you must, get a digitech digiverb at half the price, if and only if you need instant reverb satisfaction now while saving for the real thing, and keep it as back up later. and if you don't want to 'really get into surf music' and just want an effect to do one or two surf songs every now and than, that digiverb is still a better choice than the spring king. it also had very good settings for other styles of reverb, btw. btw, the origial poster said something like '$300 is a lot of money for an effect ' .... I disagree. in surf, that reverb is going to be part of your main normal sound. it will alsways be on and hence be as important as your guitar, amp and speakers. and maybe more important. so worth the money. ^^ actually its 400 dollars new (300 if you are lucky enough to get a good used one) and all I meant was, for that price it better be damn well worth it. There are plenty of pricey effects on the market that just don't hold up well on stage or in the studio. I want to be doubly sure before i invest my hard earned money. |
