And then there’s the option of reading the forum via the feed which offers an uncluttered user interface. Handy should you happen to not give a damn where somebody is from.

Personally, I care where everyone is from. It's just my warm and caring nature.

Yes, the internet is a window to the world. You get to know people from all over. Views into foreign cultures. Fascinating stuff!

I don't understand half of the things in this thread...
Had I known I wouldn't have bothered.
Anyway, yes there are no freak flags or jolly rogers. I found a cool set of ISO-3166-1 icons at the gosquared website. The icon set isn't complete, and is missing maybe a dozen countries, mainly really small island countries or protectorates in the Pacific ocean. It isn't likely anyone from those places would be members here, but you never know.
So I stumbled across these icons and thought it would be "neat" to have them available on SG101 to show off our international fan base.
That is all the motivation behind it.

There’s no doubt about your motivation, Brian. And I hope you keep them, seeing how many people can’t wait to show their pride. I’m only proud about what I acomplished, that’s why I don’t show a flag.

Well again: this isn't meant to be political. It's geographical.
I guess I give up. There are too many meanings attached to a polarizing symbol like a flag, and different people are going ascribe their own favorite belief to it. I learned something from all this.

It's great though! I'm not going to use an United States flag just because I don't want to be associated with 'Murica!. Lame reason, but I just can't bring myself to associate myself with with 'Murica represents. Partly stereotypical, shockingly real.

I'd prefer a state flag for geographical purposes, but I think maybe the flag thing turns out to be a bad idea. Maybe what we need is continent icons ... (Oddly enough in topographical terms North America is drifting to the left.)
Maybe the great thing about the forum's international membership is that it doesn't actually matter where people come from.

Sure. We are all people after all. Anyway, it's done, y'all can have fun with it, or not, as you see fit.
If anyone wants to make a Jolly Roger or what have you, in 2 sizes, there are some special ISO-3166-1 codes reserved for such silly purposes.

Ha! Same lower face. I've lost weight though, so I don't look like that anymore, but last time you saw me that is exactly what I looked like.
Good find!

Actual conversation I had with myself while trying to fall asleep:
"Wow who would have thought about the flag thing?"
"Yeah, it seemed like a fun thing to code"
"Maybe I should have provided an Earth icon?"
"But then someone would say 'I didn't choose to live on the Earth, there is nothing to be proud of'"
"And then someone will say 'If you don't like the Earth, move to Mars!"
"And then a friendly and helpful person will suggest that solar system icons would be more inclusive."
"And then that really smart German guy will make a sly and enigmatic statement that will sail right over my head. I will be too embarrassed to ask him to clarify because I'll look dumb"
"And then that rascally scamp with the impish grin from the Pacific NW will say something light-hearted and frivolous that will anger the crusty curmudgeons!"
"And then..."
And so on.
End scene.
I love you guys. Seriously.

I'm neither a patriot nor proud of "my" country. But after all I am glad, that I live here and I don't see myself making a political statement by showing the flag of the country where I currently live. So take it easy

On reflection, I've decided I can't condone the whole drift of the North American continent. I'm really upset about what we're doing to the submerged terranes of the Pacific Rim. Instead of continents, maybe if I could just display a small swatch of colorful fabric of my own choice? I like the color scheme and I intend to be buried wrapped in it.
P.S. I've always thought the whole concept of merkins was ridiculous.

You know, I don't know if I would care to live on Mars, but I would like to spend Saturday Night there some time.
