+1 on Don's. Vintage California vibe of yesteryear, clean, real nice folks @ the office, and super duper close to the starting gate.

Nabbed reservations for a return this year. Woot! Woot!

Made my reservation yesterday (they're filling up folks) and was asked if I was coming for the Surf Guitar Convention. Yup. See y'all there. Really looking forward to Aug.

I dropped off some more flyers for the convention at the
Dons Turf Motel, and they said that rooms are going very fast,
So if you are wanting to stay there, and get a good deal.
Do it very soon.

There is a Marriott Residency Hotel across the street from the Starting Gate,
And a Marriott Courtyard Hotel on the corner of Katella and Valley View
which is about 2 miles East of the Starting Gate.
I don't know how much these 2 places are, but I can assure you they are not the price of Dons Turf Motel.

Book yer room, flights and car rental now,
as the longer you wait, the rates go up.

also if anyone is wanting to share rooms or rides,
please use this thread or start a new one and maybe some of you can hook up and save even more money on rooms, and cars.

Don's Turf Motel is fine - I stayed there 2 years ago. It's clean, the staff is friendly, I felt safe being there by myself. But it's not fancy and a bit shabby, so if that bothers you, you might want to go somewhere else.

We are thinking of staying closer to the beach (Huntington, Hermosa, etc.), but it can be pricey. Anyone know of a good place out there?

Thanks, Coz

mary, i stayed at the best western in huntington beach a few years ago. it's the one that has a working oil well out one window. it was pricy but close to the pier and has parking.

here is the Facebook invite to the show,
I know Facebook is all the rage n everything,
but it says that only 93 people on there are coming to the show,
can we get more of you to confirm?

Awesome. Boss was one of the first songs that the Exotics ever learned! This is great.

Although Lead Guitarist Johnny Kirkland has passed, I'm (after 50 years) still in contact with Rex DeLong and Wayne Matheson (Rumbler's members); and I was happy for the Rumbler's, when Rex told me about this event. For anyone reading this, Rex says that this will be the "ONLY" reunion performance the Rumbler's will ever do. We are all getting up there in age (65 plus); and Rex says he will be moving to Germany later this year. I went to one of their recording sessions with them; and have not heard them (Rumbler's perform together since; although I have heard Rex and Wayne perform a couple of times since. I knew Rex before he was in the Rumbler's and went to Magnolia High School (Anaheim) with Johnny Kirkland. I am doing everything I can to make this event; as it will definantly be the last time the Rumbler's are performing on stage together, ever!!!!!!!! Don

Highly recommended in anticipation of this year's convention:

The Rumblers: It's A Gas! (Ace)

This thing is like a best of the best ofs, with rare, unreleased recordings and Downey, Dot AND Highland material. Insanely cool, detailed liner notes!

In the early 60's I worked with Jim Fielder's (MOI & BS&T fame)Wes Charles, Gary Guidice (Bass/Piano for Dick Dale) and Wayne ??? (Mod Inc.). If anyone knows how to contact any of these people, please let me know. I think Fielder's is with Paul Anka, Dick Dale has not seen Gary in years and Wayne ??? our group broke up after we held a teen dance at the Anaheim Hyatt House (we were actually invited back afterwards the crowd was so good). Any help you can be finding these people would be appreciated. don_l_kirk@live.com

Mad Magazine's "It's a Gas"

Rex says they will have a three sax lineup, for those who are into such things. Bob Jones, Dave Allen and Rex himself. They never had more than two together when active, but were able to assemble all three for this. Looking forward to it!

JonPaul's post of the recent Ace release It's a Gas, reminds that "It's a Gas" (the song) is one of my favorites. I've also like "Here Comes that Bug." Sort of a quasi-vocal.

Just convinced my boss to reschedule our big Aug 11th event for the following week. That's a relief!
