Thought I'd revive this old thread since it recently came up. Here's a few more inspiring surf music images from the 60's...

The great Eddie Bertrand with cool hot-rod, some racing trophies and not one, but two ladies! Doesn't get any cooler than that in my book!..

image

Eddie and the Showmen at what looks like The Retail Clerk's Hall. They still have monthly vintage record swap meets there. It's so cool to walk on the stage knowing the great bands that played there...

Dick Dale impressing the ladies with his big boards!...

And behind the wheel of a very exotic sportscar. Dick knew what it took to be a superstar!

It's well worth reading through this thread again. Great stuff!

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Geez Dick, it's not the size of the board that matters... hard to argue with a fast car though. Cool

Gee, Dick seems to have had a lot of cars back in the day Wink

Time to add this really mean pick of the King from the Encyclopedia of Surfing:

BTW: I asked this already some time ago: Does anybody have a decent version of the picture in the centre of Kent Crowleys book "Surf Beat" showing the Del-Tones play at Harmony Park?

COOOOOOL!!!
Kazmer added a new picture of the Original Surfaris to his Flickr-album about surfbands:

image

Hard to make out, but judging from the colour it looks like Larry Weed (next to the drums) is not playing his Jazzmaster, but yet again the sunburst Strat known from other pictures.

That color photo of Dick... cool

Makes me wish I could go back in time.

Either you surf, or you fight.

Or bring him forward in time! Best of both worlds.

This thread is great. I've hardly gotten any work done today as I've been going through all the links that have been posted.

One more entry for today. More to come!

Entry Six... GO GO GIRLS! Many Surf bands today have Go-Go Girls. Back in the sixties, I suspect that they were hired by the club or venue, but maybe they were the girlfriend of one of the guys in the band.

Here's a couple of photos I purchased at the recent Richard Delvy auction of The Challengers and their Go-Go Girl. Enjoy...

Maybe we should have a bikini/go go contest at SG101 In Aug.
Wink

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Absolutely. It'll show the young lads one of the many benefits of why they should get into surf music, and help carry it on for another generation.

Believe it or not, there were actually a few '60's surf bands that were't based in California (or Colorado...)

Here are The Mariners from Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1966. In the first photo we were entertaining an auditorium full of disabled veterans at the Rutherford County VA hospital. L-R: Robert on a Leedy white pearl drum kit, Ron (Tone Boy on SG101) playing a Silvertone solid body through a Twin Twelve, me on a '64 Jaguar into a '65 Deluxe Reverb, and Ed on a Kent bass into a '65 Bassman.

image

This pic was taken at at a house party, the third one is my then-girlfriend Sally Ann playing Robert's drums. Our original drummer was a female (Donna) but she left the band to become a varsity cheerleader.

Those really were great times. Cute girls, loud guitars, fast cars... Yes Yes

The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005)
The Hula Hounds (1996-current)
The X-Rays (1997-2004)
The Surge! (2004, 2011-2012)
Various non-surf bands that actually made money
(1978-1990)

Very cool pics! Fun Mariner shots. The Dick Dale pics are awesome.

Here's another shot of Mr. Dale looking cool on his flathead Harley. Dig the flame job on the tank and the fishtail pipes!

I think that every time I see photo from this era. Randy Nauert of The Challengers was really living the life back then. So awesome that he chronicled a lot of it! His FB page makes me crazy! Where's that Time Machine???
