thanks for the great response guys! This whole process has made me realize a couple of things:

1) I am SOOO glad to have a video camera to at least somewhat capture these moments of joy, not to mention be able to share them with my friends.

2) My main DV camera is old and outdated.... hahaha. Brian's video's have totally made a new, HD camera a higher priority for me toy-wise.

Ha!!
that's funny.
but that being said.

any documentation of the show is cool in my book.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Thanks Jamie. I just listened to the SpaceRangers CD twice, now I got to see them again on YouTube. Alas, I wasn't up to dancing like a go-go dancer, but seeing Sandy and Miriam during the set was nice. Insect Dave was out there as usual. What a weekend that was.

Craig the Keg.

Hodad makin' the scene with a six pack.

Very belatedly, here's the Eliminators doing Chris Fesker's One Gun Is All You Need at Suzy's on Sunday. Guest appearences by a remarkably Steady Freddie and parts of Crazy Miri's head.

Has anyone tried to enlist a student film-maker to film these events as a school project? There must at least one aspiring film student looking for an opportunity to make a documentary who would jump at the chance to do this.

I ask because my wife used volunteer to record the annual conferences for a national organization she belongs to. She made sure each venue had the proper recording equipment and had other volunteers on cameras and audio. They actually sold DVDs of the conferences to the attendees.

She also volunteers at a local annual music festival where every performance on every stage for three days is recorded by volunteers. The cameras are given good vantage points and the audio is fed into multitrack recording equipment for later mixing. The results look and sound great.

It surely could work, if not in time for this year, how about next year?

This is Noel. Reverb's at maximum an' I'm givin' 'er all she's got.

Steve Seagren and the Reverb Junkies project used student film-makers during the 2010 convention and associated shows. I believe their results were somewhat varied. It certainly sounded like a good idea, but maybe it works best with small tightly supervised projects, which by nature this is not. Also, it helps if the videographers know what they are seeing as well as what they are doing. The former is not very likely, and even the latter does not necessarily follow with students.

On the bright side, there is no lack of videoing going on at the SG101 Convention and associated shows, and most of the individuals involved have been more reliable than I have been at posting the results. Most of them were a bit more professional than I am, too! Starting in 2010 Jeff had everyone who played sign a release permitting the recording, which I think was an important step. That was an issue in the past, especially for some of the most professional (or at least principled) of the people involved.

There has been no effort to centralize the videoing that I am aware of. I can't say whether it would be desirable or not. I did recently see an Eliminators video that looked like it used a team or 4 or more cameramen. It looked nice, but it must have required an enormous editing effort. One guy with a camera aiming in approximately the right direction most of the time is certainly easier.

As far as larger efforts, I would certainly be willing to entertain the idea of participating, though I'm also a bit skeptical whether I would be useful in them.

it's all time and money,
and people willing to put in both.

Thanks Tena,
I have added these to our facebook and youtube channel.
Tuck, you did good.
I can't believe I didn't get to meet the infamous Tuck at the convention...or did I and didn't know it?

Thanks, Ted! I didn't really figure out who was Satanic and who wasn't until you folks played. Plus, becoming infamous has increased my natural shyness to a point where I am now virtually invisible. However, once you guys started playing I was mostly stage right with my mouth hanging open in awe and the back of my head is visible doing this in most of the videos.

FWIW, I have been posting videos and pictures over in the SG101 2011 announcement thread. This year there was no "after party" thread, so things have been popping all over the forum. Some people are posting here, and Freddie has his own thread.

I completed the Satan's Pilgrims sequence over in the SG101 2011 thread.

Reviving a long lost thread. Back in early 2009 I had just got really interested in surf instrumental music. I had grabbed a bunch of music from last.fm and was slowly growing my collection based on what the local used cd shop had (they actually had a small surf section at the time.) I think I was mainly listening to Satan's Pilgrims, The Blue Hawaiians, El Ray, The Insect Surfers, The Mermen, The Kilaueas, Messur Chups, and The Atomic Mosquitos. I was not that big of a live music person, probably having gone to less to 10 concerts total in my life.

In 2010 I got a fancy camera since I raided some retirement money to pay off some bills (needed something for myself.) The camera did low light really well and I had seen some really killer concert photos on the net. I heard about the San Francisco show with the Atomic Mosquitos and the Space Cossacks and thought that might be the only time I would see them. So I went to the show and was blown away. I shot some videos and the camera did fine though the mic was overloaded. A couple of these videos I posted back then but I found a couple I had missed and recently uploaded them.

Money well spent Darren. Darren has been a great friend to all the Bay Area surf bands. Worship

aka Mycroft Eloi of The TomorrowMen
aka Shecky Shekels of Meshugga Beach Party

It was the best of times, it was the blurst of times

Thanks so much, Darren. My husband and son were at this show - I was still in Southern California that day (at that moment at Suzy's in Hermosa Beach) having attended my first SG101 convention the previous day. Wow, these bands were outstanding! Very glad to get a look at what was going on at Hotel Utah that day.
