Discovered these guys by accident. They were on Del-Tone records in the 60s: Cool tune.

One of my favorite 1960s bands!
Del-Fi Records, Del-Tone was exclusively for Dick Dale.

Yes indeed, Brian! Highly recomended. This comp is one of the things that blew my mind and highly influenced me and The Ghastly Ones. Tim Fitzpatrick's drumming (which is among the best, if not the best in surf as far as I'm concerned) and the guitar work, production and tunes are top notch!!! Five out of five stars for Hang Five!

Yes, and funny you mention that. I just had a conversation about Tim (regarding his style) last night. It's great that we still get to see him play because he's the real deal.

Indeed! He has still has every bit of the energy and flair today that he did back in the early sixties. Amazing!

A classic and a really good one too.

I have their albums on two 2in1 cds, and enjoy them very much.

It's go-go, not cry-cry.

About ten years ago I found a stack of "Hang Five" CDs in the clearance bin of Barnes & Noble (I think) selling for something like $4 or $5, so I bought every one of them - probably about ten. Over the next couple of years I gave them away to people interested in surf music. About as good of an introduction to surf music as any. It's a fantastic collection.

The Lively Ones - really, none better!

I took the best off Hang Five, and their other comp.
Heads Up: The Best of the Lively Ones, Vol. 2, which includes some great tracks including Pipeline, Let's Go Trippin', Latinia, Mexico, Rumble and ripped my own comp, which is a staple I listen to over and over.

Anyway, great you 'discovered' The Lively Ones, and great comments on them by others.

It was cool watching Tim play live at Tiki Oasis and see how he combines two different grip styles to get his unique sound. Great drummer!!

Heads Up, volume 2 of their best-of, is pretty good as well. Not as good as Vol. 1, but still pretty worthwhile. Between the two of them, you have everything essential they ever did.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Actually, between those two CDs you pretty much have everything they recorded, not just the essential stuff. There are only three tracks that were released on their '60s records that are not on these two CDs, and one of them was actually by the Sentinals ("Surfer Girl"). The two missing tracks are "Hillbillie Surf" (sic) and "Walking Memories" - not a big loss in either case.

It's missing those three plus one entire album:

Not an essential album, but a, shall we say ... "interesting" one.

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

Wow, I had never heard of that album. According to Google it was released in 1967 and it sounded like they switched gears.

Incidentally, I just wanted to point out that the Lively Ones had - in my opinion - one of the best bass players in surf music in Ron Griffiths. Bass players rarely get much attention, but Griffiths deserves it, his bass lines were almost always melodic and more than just simple root notes. In addition, he tended to be mixed quite loud (relatively speaking for that era), which was the right decision. If you haven't checked out his playing before, pay attention the next time, I think you'll really enjoy it.
