Warren, Fiberglass Jungle was my first favorite too--I never hear it mentioned much. Cool!
I still am not tired of the Astronauts Baja, as obvious a choice as it is. Often covered, I think it's impossible to improve on that recording.
I have a little bit of a obsession with Boss BSA. I was always sure it was a cover of a first wave tune. Given the awesomeness of Satan's Pilgrims catalog, I can't explain why that one always hits me like it does. I put them in the pantheon of greats along side the best, first wave or whatever.
One more, since I'm breaking the rule anyway. Tempted by the Bambi Molesters is just a gorgeous melody. Again, it gets lost in their astounding catalog.

everybody up immediately comes to mind - brought back to contempoary awareness by the Phatom Surfers and later, the Ghastly Ones, but there's so much good stuff its hard to pick..Mr Rebel, Third Star, Church Key, Cat on a Hot Foam Board....don't even get me started on Jim Messina & The Jesters or the Astronauts....High Tide....

Can't say I have a definite favorite either. I tend to cycle between different flavors of the week/month/whatever. If I absolutely had to choose one it would probably come out of a list of a handful or so: Intruder, The Saracen, Sahar, Margaya, Everybody Up, The Victor, Sea of Glory. All winners right there.

"Boss BSA" also happens to be my favorite Surf tune. I like the fact that the main part doesn't even have a surf beat. The main riff is cool, the changes are great, and the whole second half of the song is fudging phat yo'. I love that part soo much. I don't know why but the whole fuckin' song sounds epic to me.

My favorite surf tune is "Diamonds" by Jet Harris and re-done by The Ventures on their 'Surfing' album which had a huge influence on me....still does!! I don't think Jet was doing a "surf" tune but to me it became a "surf" tune when The Ventures did it and included it on that album...i like the Jet Harris version drum solo...it stumbles a bit but it's cool...the song was written by Jerry Lordan (sp?) who also wrote "Apache".

For some reason Penetration seems to stick in my mind. It just seems like the perfect example of first wave Surf to me. (This opinion subject to frequent revision.)

Hey, I cover that tune! Martin Schmidt has been touring California for a couple of weeks now. He is in Santa Barbara today, I might be having dinner with him tonight.

Is he touring his surf band? Are there tour listings anywhere?

For me it's definitely "The Bells of St. Kahuna" by Slacktone. Someday when I have one of my fits of delusions of grandeur I will figure out an arrangement to cover this one and fail miserably.
From the first wave I still think that the original "Pipeline" by the Chantays is one of the most beautifully arranged surfsong of all times (despite the "most overrated classic"-thread on this forum) - just listen how the piano blends seamlessly into the guitarsound.

Martin returned to Germany Saturday morning, no band or shows, just a vacation with his girlfriend. You just missed each other at Death Valley Danny.

The Fender IV and Jesters stuff is damned good, but for some weird reason I think Heartbeat by Avengers VI may be my favorite.
