Brian, I totally agree but aren't all Yahoo Groups features inferior

I see that you're still pushin' that bombora.net, Klas!
That bombora.net search feature has too many options. I don't want to have to
make sure I've got all the right buttons pushed. I've had good success with the
simple Yahoo version. And no, my VCR is not still flashing 12:00.

Marty, you don't have to push all the buttons if you don't want to.
It's enough to type in a keyword and then hit the "Search" button.
Also to clarify, I have no connections whatsoever to the Bombora Surf
Music Forums. I just found it a day when I was more than usual fed up
with the messed up Yahoo boards.
I wonder if everyone understands that these type of things actually
can be of importance for surf music to grow and attract new fans and
win back old ones.

I understand that one doesn't have to push any of the buttons, Klas, but the
standard no button search works fine and, while I'm waiting for the results, I
don't have to wonder if I should have pushed a given button.

I think you're exaggerating the shortcomings of the current system, Klas. We now
have record numbers of posts on this list. It seems to be working for most. If
someone wants to be understood in the context of a thread, they reprint the
pertinent part of the previous post to which they are responding. Sure, some in
digest mode aren't in that practice but I most often know what they are
referring to. I haven't seen adverts ruining any posts. I don't want to know
what a sub-forum is, one big forum is fine, I have a delete button. I've had no
trouble with clicking on supplied links, and there's been some great ones
lately. I see too many cutesy symbols and "buttons to push" on the bombora.net
thing to find it atttractive.

Brian, have you thought about putting up a modern type of forum on
the SurfGuitar101.com website? The software isn't free and has to be
purchased but I would gladly pay my share for a more functional forum.

However, if the board went to a modern forum the photos and files

Klas, I can really tell this is an important issue with you, you bring
this up every few months.... :)
To be honest I'm perfectly happy with the email format that Yahoo Groups
provides. Messages come to me with Yahoo Groups (passive receive), and
I don't have to click through lots of pages filled with animated smiley
faces on those web forums (requires active behavior on my part). I'm
just lazy I guess.
However, if enough people wanted such a forum I may entertain the idea.
Does anyone besides Klas and Marty have an opinion? Email me off list or
create one of those Yahoo polls.
Thanks,
BN
I have no trouble editing posts and spell-checking with the current system but
I'm using Outlook Express.

Okay now you got me curious. I'm looking into whether my web host
provider supports phpBB, a free web based forum software package. You
can see an example of it in action at the Hypnotic IV web site:
Marty, I think Jacob meant editing his posts after he posted them. Can't
do that with Yahoo Groups currently.
Jacob is also right, Yahoo Groups gives us a file section, photo
section, the database stuff (that no one uses), polls, and even a
real-time chat (has anyone used this?). Of course we could keep the
Yahoo Group active for these features, but just shut off the message
part (make it for announcements only).
I'll start a Yahoo poll on the issue. If my web host supports phpBB the
computer geek in me will force me to setup a test forum.
BN
The Bambi Molesters use the same type of board.

Brian, the poll feature works great on web forums. Check out this
example:
--- In , "Brian Neal" <brian@s...> wrote:
Remember, the web based forum may not give us a file/photo/poll area.
But we might be able to keep the Yahoo Group just for those features.
Why does Surfguitar101 need to change format? There is a perfectly good "modern"
style
BB at Bombora.net. If people want to use it they would, the fact that it remains
unpopular
is all the polling you need.
It's not broken, don't fix it.

Ny only problem with the whole format has been with the search
itself. I tried to search for "Clapton" to see if any of you guys
had gone to that Clapton guitar festival in Texas last summer only
to find out I was only searching the last couple of hundred entries.
THAT was annoying. But I can search on Google, if I really need to.
I don't know if that's grounds for changing the whole site.
Particularly, if there's a trade off with files, etc.
Also, what about people who only come so often, what are you gonna
do? Post a sign saying moved to a new address?
It isn't BROKE ENOUGH to fix.
Dave
Oh ok, Brian,
But I would hope that one wouldn't edit a post after it was posted, that sounds
a little slippery. We all make occasional posts that we want to fix and if we're
particularly embarrassed, we follow with a correction post.

Agree with Ferenc. I actually like cruising thru my inbox reading these
things as opposed to using the browser, waiting on a site, going back and
forth, etc. The way the group is now, to me, feels more informal. I think
lists lend themselves to specialization, and forums to a broader segment,
i.e., fenderforum. Keep the list!

I just checked this using your Clapton example, Dave. It actually does search
the entire data base for occurances of "Clapton". It looks like the first time
Clapton appeared on this list was a mention from Ivan in April of 2002. It
doesn't display all the results at once. I hit the "next" button a few times.
