I love Fernandes. I knew they did odd shapes but have never seen
that one. That seems like a decent price too.

Pollo Jono played a $165 (Jazzmaster body/Strat pickup arrangement)
Fernandes for a couple years 'til the chrome disintegrated off the
metal parts. A decent guitar...

I really think this is a golden age for cheap guitars, they still have
funky shapes like the early 60s weirdos, but the necks are straight
and they sound OK.

Huh? Maybe a Chinese JagMASTER but not a Jaguar of any kind that I am aware
of.
Be aware that the newer Jagmasters are not in the now defunct Vista series
(which were made in Japan). The newer ones are made in China or Indonesia or
something like that, now have a 25.5" scale (not much Jaguar left now), and
get pretty bad reviews.

I was referring to the Jagmaster.
I haven't seen a single bad review of them yet. Most of the folks I've
talked to seem to think they're much better than the vistas as well.

I have a Vista series Super-Sonic. I replaced the pickups with Seymour
Duncans and then added push/pull pots so I could coil tap the humbuckers. I
didn't want to mess with getting a different pickguard (for the extremely
rare Super-Sonic shape). You may consider coil-tapping if you don't want
mess with getting single coils. You may have problems getting P-90's to fit
on a Jagmaster.
The Super-Sonic I have has a nice neck, but maybe too narrow (think A-width)
and somewhat thin. In general the build, fit, and finish is very good for a
"cheap" guitar. I tried out a newer non-Vista Series Jagmaster and found it
to be extremely unlikeable. Sharp fret edges, unsanded feel, handled like a
plank, ugly finish. Your mileage may vary of course... :)
BN
The SS is out of production though, isn't it?
I thought about tapping the hummers on a Jag but my experience
with split HB's hasn't been all that good. To me, they seem to end
up sounding hollow and nowhere near what true SC's sound like.
The flaws you note on the Jags doesn't surprise me but would
also be what I'd expect on a Squier.

Yes, as is the entire Vista series of Squiers.

Sounds okay to me. Wanna buy it? :)

The Vista series was a pretty nice line made in Japan. It was the same crew
that turned out the MIJ Jaguars and Jazzmasters which a lot of folks on this
list have.
I also agree with other posters; if you want a Jazzmaster or Jaguar and only
have $500 max, you should really save another $50 or so and just get a MIJ
model. If you are lucky you can get one for $500, but I usually see them in
the $550-$650 range. Just save another $50 and get something you really seem
to want.
BTW...You are really confusing me (and perhaps some others on this
list)....the term "Jag" commonly refers to Jaguar, not Jagmaster. Jaguars
have been around since, what, 1962? The Jaguar has the rights to the
shorthand "Jag", not the Jagmaster! :)
Good luck with your quest...

Do it right the first time! Buy American! That's right, the good ole' U.S.A.
By the time you modify a cheap guitar the way you want it, it might not be the
way you want it, and then Fender gets the last laugh!
You get what you pay for. Ain't no in between.

Yeah, I actually saw something like that at Costco. It's made in
Indonesia and comes with a little amp.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
It sounds like I'm better of going with the "real deal" even
if it has to be off of Ebay.
If anybody knows a reputable seller or dealer elsewhere,
please let me know.
I'm looking for a CIJ Jaguar RI in Brownburst or White.
Thanks again.
hey man go down to your nerest pawn or guitar shop and look for a fender
toronado.

Try guitargai or bluzey on Ebay - they both have Jaguars and JM's on
Ebay regularly. You could also do a search on gbase.com, but be sure
to contact the dealers there before getting your heart set on
something, as alot of the links are outdated. Check out Yahoo
actions, to - I just saw a sunburst MIJ JM go for about $400 about a
month ago.

Bluzey and GUitargai are my recommendations too. Thing with Guitar
Gai is he always gets cool colors, and the guitar often have aged
pickups and guards on them so they always look really good.

I found my first MIJ Jag by picking up the phone book and calling
around to local guitar/music shops. You never know...

Nobody around these parts ever gets these.
Guitargai and Bluesy_Guitars seem to be the names I keep hearing.
Thanks again.

Ishibashi sometimes has used gear at a lower price too. Might be worth
e-mailing them...
My brother got a Strat from them last month. Great service, it was
actually delivered on a Sunday!

Related to this topic, has anyone checked out the Fender Cyclone II
(the new version w/ single coil pick-ups) as a possible solution for
an inexpensive quality surf guitar?
It looks kind of surfy and has a scale length close to that of a
Jaguar. Musician's Friend has them listed for a little over $500.
How about it, would this work for surf?
Thanks-
Rick
I think Richard (errantjedi) has one of these. Maybe he will weigh in on this
question.
