I checked this, and it seems by no means a matter of fact that AmStd
guitars had these veneered alder/poplar bodies. It's a theory by
some, and disputed by others. Or am I misreading it?
> Ivan, does your Strat Plus have the swimming pool route?
Yes, it does. I've just been too busy (in combination with lazy) to
go looking under there yet. I'll do it at some point. I actually
got another body when I bought it in '92 - within two days of buying
it, the wood on top in front of the tremolo post cracked! (I guess
that's support for your theory that those guitars weren't of very
high quality back then.) They replaced the body for me, but had to
get the Custom Shop to paint it Fiesta Red as that wasn't a standard
color for those guitars any more. so, I don't know if that means I
have a better chance of it being all-alder or not....

Thank you, but the guitar you saw me play was a black eighties '62-
reissue US Strat, not my ex-Strat-Plus, which is Fiesta Red.
Nevertheless, I can't tell any significant sonic difference between
those two guitars now that they both have the same pickups and
tremolo. And I've tried.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I have not heard anything
about it before, and it's quite interesting.

Yeah some claim they actually found poplar under the alder. To be
honest with you I haven't taken the time to take mine apart either.
I'm just assuming its poplar because it's a '93 which seems to be a
height year for poplar bodies, call me a a pessimist.
However, I do know that it is capped just because of the veneer over
the back body contour.

Alright you're right, but it was on stage :). I have heard it on
recordings so my original statement still stands. So Ivan, with a
few mods to my American Standard do you think I could get it in the
same ballpark as your Stat Plus?

I know that Albert Lee on his Tele uses very light strings ( 9's) and gets a BIG
tone out
of it. Amps, EQ's, effects, fingers and the rest come into play, but with
heavier strings
you will just get a fatter tone on top of what your are using. It's simple
physics. You
have more "stuff" in the string vibration ... more metal to petal.
Love the tone from The Ghastly Ones. On one of their tunes, Thunderhead, "the
Doctor's" tone is awesome, especially on the high parts. Although he's probably
using
8's just to blow my theory away.
Les, you are smoke'n on your CD's! Great playing. I'd have to say you'd even
sound
meaner with 12's :)
Someone said earlier that bigger strings were not as hard to play as some people
would think. I agree. I've heard for years how huge SRV's strings were and very
hard
to play. I don't have big hands (sorry ladies) but didn't think 13's tuned to E
were bad
at all.
Off to Ebay to look for replacement neck. grrrrrh
Cheers!
Dale
