Would appreciate some "feedback" on what strings to try. I have a
MIJ Jaguar and a USA Strat (with Fender noiseless pickups), Blackface
Dual Showman, reissue Fender outboard reverb. Any suggestions as to
specific strings- Brand, flatwound, roundwound, nickel plated, pure
nickel, stainless, gauge, etc, etc. Being from Colorado and old
enough to and have seen the Astronauts "live" numerous times, I love
their sound but would like to learn what most are using today.
Thanks,

I use the following, but strings are really subjective, so you should
definitely experiment.
For a reasonably authentic surf sound on a Jazzmaster:
D'Addario Chromes 12-52
For good overall strings on a Strat:
D'Addario EXL115 nickel roundwounds 11-49
For good Shadows (British early '60s) Strat sound:
Rotosound guitar strings, mix of 12 and 13 gauge sets
(these are hard to find in the US, but sound great)
Good luck!

Hi,
I have put flatwound D'Addrio Chromes 0.012" on my MIA Jag. I haven't tried
too many other strings, but these last a long time (especially compared to
roundwounds, it seems) and they are not expensive like other flats. The big
strings take a bit to get used to, and the G is wound, but the sound is very
big and twangy. I love the combination of Jag/flatwounds/reverb unit/tube
amp.
I had to tweak my truss rod after putting these on, but didn't have to mess
with the nut.
I still keep roundwounds on my strat.
Thats cool about seeing the Astronauts! 3 guitar lineup?

D'Addario chromes medium gage. They're flat wound 13 through 56.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention the wound G. I buy a seperate unwound G size 21
or 22 with the D'Addario chrome set.

I'm with everyone else . . . I use D'addario chromes.
They last a long time and feel really good. I like
the 11's 'cuz I play surf, but would still like to be
able to bend. I like the flatwound g, and you
generally don't get that on any strings smaller than
11's. I find that these strings keep my jazzmaster
from having too much tone or being too bright. Not to
mention the fact that, if you're a real fan of the
vintage sound, flatwounds were the original strings on
the electric guitar (please let me know if I'm wrong,
but this is what I've always been told).
Use Chromes . . . Be one of Us.

I guess I'm chime in too. I use them too. They seem
to last about 2 or 3 weeks for me before like 4 of
them break at once (not litterally, but in the same
day).

I'm sure this has been covered here before, but.....what kind of
strings is everyone using and on what? For everyday use, I'm
partial to 013-052 ghs flatwounds on my Jag and 011-048 ghs
flatwounds on my JM. When I feel like getting fancy, then it's
Pyramids.
For surf, on a couple of strats I have13-56 D'Addario chromes BUT I change out
the wound G for a plain 20. On a couple of Teles, I have super slinky 9's for
that twangy bendable sound.

On my Jag Pyramid Flatwounds 13s. On the Jazzmaster usually the same
but I tried out a set of Thomastik 12s for kicks. Both sets are
nickel wound strings.

I went with the 11-52 bulk packs from the Friend. I have no issues with
these strings. I get 12 sets for around $35.00. To me the quality of tone
and price makes it well worth it.

On one of my guitars I have Fender Flats .11s with the third string
replaced to a non-wound string. I prefer D'addario strings but I got
the fender flats for 4 bucks a pack. I have a set of Chromes waiting
to go on when I get my Jaguar. On my Casino I have D'addario
roundwound .11s. When I get my Jaguar I may put roundwounds on it
instead of flats and put flats on my Jazzmaster. I was pro-flat for
years and now I am coming to like roundwounds again. I use light
picks, Dunlop nylon .46, so flatwounds kill those picks. I am pretty
found of those picks so I would rather changes strings than the picks.
Monty, what brand are these? The bigget E string I've
found on a set of 11 roundwounds is 49.

I confess to using D'addiairo roundwounds, 11-49ish, on a '59 Gretsch Dual
Annie. I'd like to use the bigger gauges but my tendons won't let me. This leads
me to my own surf question...To bend a whole tone, or to only bend a half?

I've had to tame down from 13's to 54's back to 10's 52's round. Major loss of
tone.
My Highway One Strat just can't handle it. The neck bows like crazy even with a
truss
rod adjustment. They don't make 'em like they used to. It is a great sounding
guitar,
but you can tell the difference when you pick up a Strat from 10 to 15 years
ago.
Dale
Really? I would've thought that pretty much any
Standard Strat or better could handle 13's. Have you
tried putting strings that heavy on any other late
model Strat? I'm about to try 12's on my Yamaha.

And speaking of strings, anybody ever try GHS brite flats?
Just curious, I had never heard of them before?
If Dale has really given' the truss a good tightening, the only thing that I can
think of that is causing the issue with the 13's on the Highway 1 Strat is that
the truss may not have been installed enough towards the back of the neck. Thus
it would not be able to counter-act the pull of the heavy strings. If this is
the case, over time even the 10's will bow the neck. I've had no prob with 13's
on three recent Mexi-Strats so I don't think it's a case of not makin' 'em like
they use to.

Did you tighten up the springs in the tremolo? 13's shouldnt be a problem
for a hwy 1 strat. If anything, your nut may need a bit of filing to handle
them but that's about it.
