Ventures Fuzz question

Jerry (wipeoutboy63) - 13 Oct 2005 15:04:45

Hi All,
I'm just wondering, does anyone know exactly what type of Fuzz pedal the
ventures used on their Albums?
I'm especially looking for the "Bee" sound.
Thanks a lot,
Jerry S.
P.S. For all the Surfguys and Gal's living near Belgium, we were asked
to open for the Surfaris at 31/10. The Surfaris will play at "JeKa"
which is at Kasterlee near Turnhout. Hope to see you there.

As I remember, the mosrite fuzzrite was credited on at least one album cover. I
think there is one on ebay as I write this.....a maestro fuzz tone will give
that hard edge sound also.......ed

Being an old timer, I had both the Gibson Maestro Fuzz Tone and the
Fuzzrite (bought it when I was in college for $35 with the money my
parents sent me for food, so I ate cereal for 2 weeks, but you know how
that goes ;-) ). Anyway I found the Fuzzrite to be far superior. You
can buy a new clone call the Fuzzbrite here: I've also seen the
schematic around on the web. Not hard to make.

That's some cool stuff, Marty! How does it sound? It's a solid-
state, right?
Speaking of Ventures amps, I've long wondered which amps they are seen
playing on the cover of the On Stage - Around the World Album. Any
idea?

Thanks Ivan. Yeah, it's solid state and probably about 40 watts. It sounds very
good and the Fuzzrite has the classic Fuzzrite sound but the effects channels
are noisey. It was a poor design and most of these amps were returned to Mosrite
for repair. Semie Mosely went through a 200K credit line that the Ventures had
with Crocker Bank trying to make the amp fly. This caused the break up between
Mosrite and the Ventures.
I keep it around as a collectable and wouldn't want to use it at a gig. It's too
big and heavy and fragile. The Ventures used the amp on their '67 Japan tour but
not much after that. Here's a picture of them using it in that era:
I don't know what those piggy-back amps on "On Stage" are. Some kinda Japanese
brand, I'm guessin'.

Vincent Bell used one fuzz on Whistle Stop (album), which is rock in my book.
I think that came out in 61 or 62.

That was before 66, right? Back then there was no such thing as a Fuzzrite.
Somebody built
one for them. Like on the Surfing With album, it's a slightly different
distortion, not as
radical, but fuzzy. They also had a compressor custom-built.
The-dream-come-true-site
where I once found all those Ventures/Mosrite details is no longer,
unfortunately.
If I want that early distortion sound, I use the fuzz in a Schaller Fuzz-Wah,
and put the
guitar's (Mosrite) Volume knob to 9. That gets pretty close. Probably should
change the
transistor from silicon to germanium for early/mid 60s sound.

Didn't the "2000 lb. Bee" single preceed the Surfing Album?
> witch by the way is one of top surf albums of all time ,
Really??? You think so? I always thought that was a pretty weak
release for the Ventures - and that, despite the title, it isn't
really a surf album. No reverb, and I don't think they really
understood what surf music was about at that point. I don't think
they really got it until the WDR, Vol. 2 album, a year (and more
than several albums) later.

all the ventures records are great records;man. some better than
others(and i have my presonal favs, but to call there surfing record
weak i think that a bit of a subjective point of view(they wrote most
of the tunes on that record) no reverb listen to pipline ,the
cruncher, and ten toes over wow no reverb.i had the record in 63 as
well as the surfairs wipeout and surfer chioce by dick dale.do those
records have more verb. than the ventures surfing album, and what about
nookie playing on the surfing record, pretty weak right.i been seeing
lots of list of great surf records.but most are records form 79-2005
or comp of earlyer stuff.but what about the ground breakin early stuff
like bud shanks," slipperly when wet" sound track ablum witch came
out in 1956 even thou the're a jazz group you can still call it a
surf record with drums guitar bass sax its all there even the twang
man .i happen to like all of it. the new as well the old

The Fuzzrite and the Maestro Fuzz-Tone sounds quite different compared
to each other. Biggest difference is that the Maestro have much less
sustain. Both sounds great in their own ways though.

About 15 years ago, I read that a Satisfaction wasn't recorded with any
kind of fuzz box, it was acutally recorded using a amp with one blown
out power tube.

That fuzzrite schematic is the way it should have been made, with true
bypass. That's the way I rewired mine, but orginally it used 1/2 the
foot switch to disconnect the battery when in the non-fuzz position.

I think it was a Fuzz Tone, or some other pedal. You can hear Keith
Richards click it on and off during the song.

I am terribly impressed by that tone. That is the first time I have
heard a Mosrite Fuzzrite. I don't own the Ventures albums that many of
you guys own. I only own a couple LPs and none of them have it. I
could really hear myself using one. Not in the band but it sounds like
a lot of fun to use. I've always enjoyed a little fuzz but I have
never had the cash to buy all the sweet effects. Tangerine by Led
Zeppelin is a sound I enjoy. Not sure if that is fuzz but it rules
nonetheless.
