Yeah, that Ed Roman is a piece of work. The Mosrites he sells aren't the same as
the ones Chris and I have. They're made by a different Japanese company and they
don't have the Ventures logo. I don't know what other differences there are. I'm
guessing they're good quality but you're right, those prices are ridiculous. The
Excellents were also expensive but not ridiculous. They sold for around a grand,
the next model up was around 1400- and the sidejack was just under 3G's.

Someone's got some spare cash laying around :)
Our old obese drummer had a excellent 65 and it sounded great.
Couldn't put heavy strings on it tho, and man, the neck was so
thin! I thought if I could play a Jaguar I'd be able to play
anything (What a good debate that would be, "Jaguar vs Mosrite's
playability")
I was in Vegas last May and had to stop off at Ed Romans, what a fat
idiot, anyway he had the sidejacks, and the regular Mosrite models.
I think the side jack was around 4 grand and the regular was
$2500.00. No Japanese reissue is worth that.

Yes, the Excellent 65 I played was REALLY close to what Ed Roman is
selling these days. I hear Nokie Edwards was rather instrumental in
having the Excellent 65s pulled, and has had his people pester some
ebay sellers. I hear he refers to them, in his accent,
as "contraband!"

I've listed a couple of "Excellent 65" models on ebay and been sent
threatening letters from The Ventures law firm and had the auctions
pulled off by ebay. I was told that ANYTHING with The Ventures logo
except original Mosrites built in the '60s are illegal.....however,
when I asked the law firm for a list of legitimate serial numbers
for the Ventures models, they said that they had them but wouldn't
release them to anyone. I currently have one of the Mosrites that E.
Roman sells.....funny how as soon as he became the "exclusive"
distributor of those models the price jumped $600. Mike at
myrareguitars.com still has pictures of Mosrites for sale that he
says were built by Semie Mosely in the 80s that have the Ventures
logo on them......perhaps his being located in Canada keeps The
Ventures Police from bothering him? --- In, "supertwangreverb"

Yeah, I suspect that's Tim Wilson, Don's son who is behind the stopping of the
sale of the Japanese gray market Ventures models on Ebay. He's doing it 'cause
he wants the Wilson Bros models to be the exclusive Ventures models.
There is argument as to whether Semie actually put Ventures logos on his '80's
Mosrites. He wanted to and advertised that way initially but the Ventures put
the nix on it. I have one of the '80's models but the logo was put on in later
years. I don't know how myrareguitars is getting away with the sale of gray
market Ventures models. The Ventures were successful in stopping the practice in
Japan.

Then what is the deal with The Hypnotic IV's Mosrites? They are endorsed
by a Japanese company called Fillmore that makes "Mosrite of California"
guitars. Man this Mosrite stuff gives me a headache. I understand
Fillmore is different company altogether than the ones who made the
"Excellent" models. Is that right?
At last April's Sacramento Surf Coasters show I got a good close up look
at Hypno Andy's Fillmore Mosrite. It looked really nice. Shigeo really
was digging it too as he played it during the jam session and was asking
Andy lots of questions about it.

It's not Nokie that stopped the Excellent, he doesn't own the rights to the
Ventures name. It's Don Wilson and his son Tim wantin' to make their Wilson Bros
the only current Ventures models. As an interesting note, Nokie, while still
playing with the Ventures, has never been a full partner in the Ventures . Even
in the '60's he was a hired hand. That was his choice.

Yes, the Excellent 65 I played was REALLY close to what Ed Roman is
selling these days. I hear Nokie Edwards was rather instrumental in
having the Excellent 65s pulled, and has had his people pester some
ebay sellers. I hear he refers to them, in his accent,
as "contraband!"

don't know what other differences there are. I'm guessing they're
good quality but you're right, those prices are ridiculous. The
Excellents were also expensive but not ridiculous. They sold for
around a grand, the next model up was around 1400- and the sidejack
was just under 3G's.

Yeah well, whatever. I still think it's funny that Nokie would refer
to them as contraband. There's something about Nokie that cracks me up.

It's the fact that his name is Nokie.... It has to effect your
outlook on life.
I heard he was wounded in the war, and can only stand for short
periods, even in the 60's. On the cover of the Ventures Live in
japan cd, you can see his stool. It has to be a trip seeing
someone tear it up like he does on that disc sitting down!!
hey Marty, any ideas on finding a heavier spring for the trem on
the Mosrite? I used some washer under mine, but I'd still like a
little heavier strings on it.

Ok, I just suspect the story got related wrong from someone confusing Don with
Nokie. This is not to say that Nokie is not a crack up, but I don't really know.
Nokie now has his own Mosrite knock-off brand called the "Hitchhiker". It's
guldern ugly if ya ask me. Many Nokie fanatics are buyin' 'em.

Yeah well, whatever. I still think it's funny that Nokie would refer
to them as contraband. There's something about Nokie that cracks me up.

That was his choice.

Yes, Fillmore is not the same company that made the Excellent. Fillmore makes Ed
Roman's Mosrites. www.tymguitars.com has more details for those who wanna
know.

Ebay and possibly allparts.com for the heavier Mosrite spring, Chris.

I have a question for you Mosrite players. Are the older Mostrites good or what?
About six years ago a funky clothing store in town had a bunch of vintage gear
in the
back. They had what appeared to be three vintage Mostrites for about $700 to
$1000.
Don't remember the models, but they played pretty bad. Really thin frets, thin
necks,
didn't feel very well made. I must be missing something here, please help the
uninformed...
I have a Fillmore re-issue Mosrite and an original '66......I think
Mosrites are a bit of an aquired taste. The small necks and low
frets do take some getting used to, but once you get aquainted with
them, picking up just about any other make of guitar will feel "big"
in your hands. A good comparison would be a Rickenbacker 12 string
to just about any other 12 string made.....Rickenbacker necks are
also small and a lot of people just can't get used to them, but once
you've gained a comfort level with them, nothing compares to the
ease of playing and the sound they have. I sure wish I could walk
into a "funky clothing store" and find 3 vintage Mosrites for sale
for $700-$1000 each....I'd RUN to the bank! --- In, "darklsurf" <dcordes@s...> wrote:

Lets see, I don't think your missing anything. Every Mosrite I've
played has been like that. If you could bend the strings on
those "frets" you'd get stuck on the closest string because they are
so damn close together!(Nokie managed) Sorry to all the Mosrite
lovers out there, but I think for the most part those guitars really
are a mistake, I wouldn't pay more than 500 bucks for one. Some of
the vintage ones are really trashy. At the Chicago Music Exchange
(the rape exchange) they have tons of vintage ones, and he asks 6-7
grand for most of them, compared to his 2-3 grand Jaguars they are
in terrible physical and playability shape. I'd still take one at a
decent price just because they sound so GOOD!

Isn't there a reasonble Mosrite facsmile that doesn't
have the issues that Mosrites have? My Yamaha SGV
neck is a bit tightly spaced for my tastes and makes
an MIJ Jag neck seem really roomy. Are the necks on
the Wilson Bros. guitars like that? I find that the
longer I play the more I like chunkier necks.

Richard,
If you like a slightly chunkier neck, the Wilson VM-65 (which I use
along with the VM-10 Strat-Style model) is a pretty good sub for an
original Mosrite.

Too many Mosrite facsimiles use PAF 90 style pick-ups or humbuckers neither of
which acheive the Mosrite sound. Maybe a Wilson Bros is the way to go and then
swap out the pick-ups for Mosrite pick-ups found on Ebay. The Japanese copy
Mosrite pick-ups have the right sound and go for much less.

I am a Mosrite lover yet I agree with a lot of what Bill says. Purdy much every
"feature" of the guitar is wrong. The ultra low frets hinder string bending, I
can't hang with the too-thin neck for very long before I crave the luxary width
of a Fender. The cutaway is backwards with less depth for higher strings than
for lower strings. But they have a great sound and I don't agree that they were
poorly made. They were well made but poorly designed.
Buying a vintage one can not be done on line. You really need to play the
vintage one before you buy it. The main problem that I have come against on
vintage Mosrites is getting the action right and string buzz. I have yet to find
a vintage Mosrite that didn't have a very difficult to access truss rod. And
with the low frets, many vintage ones need a fret job which for me, takes away
from the vintage value.

Yeah, I also had a Rick 6 stringer that had the too-thin neck. I played it purdy
much exclusively for 2 years. Ya get use to it but instead of finding other
Gibsons and Fenders "big" in my hands they felt more like luxary in my hands and
I eventually sold the Rick. I do like my Mosrites for the sound and the funny
backwards looks. .

Mosrites do have thin necks and frets, some like that for speed. Those used to
bigger, spacier fretting do not care for this Mosrite feature.
Like anything else, it all depends on how well the guitar was taken care of. I
have played some vintage Mosrites that were mint, played and sounded like new.
I've also seen my share of train wrecks that have been beat to shit. Not every
Mosrite is the same, they were mostly hand made one at a time so the differences
can vary greatly.
I've also seen the train wrecks sell for much more than you mention. These
guitars would probably be worth more to a collector than functional.
Depending on model/year and condition, vintage Mosrites will sell between $3,500
& $5,000! Maybe more.
Disclaimer, this is not a guarantee, many variables. just my 2 cents
