Marty Tippens (mctippens) - 13 Mar 2005 15:59:30

I don't think anyone considers Flingel Bunt to be the best Shadows song. On the
other hand, it is an example of a song the Shadows wrote and for which they are
best known. The "Savage" is a better tune but The Shadows didn't write "The
Savage".

I didn't want to get into this, but here goes anyway:
Jacob, you gotta go buy "Ventures In Space". Where do you think MoAM?
got started from? That and their TV themes album. You can tell they were
a big influence on the early MoAM?
The Shadows never wrote Apache, Sleep Walk, Telstar, or Hawaii 5-0
either....
Jan Wenner is a guy.
The Shadows have a lot of great songs, I wouldn't consider Flingel Bunt
their best. Man of Mystery rocks pretty hard for an early 60's song. And
uh, what about The Savage? FBI, Frightened City, Gonzales, Atlantis,
Apache...not all of these rock hard, and they didn't write all of these,
but they are great songs and very well played. I think they make Flingel
Bunt look kind of pedestrian.
It does kind of rub me the wrong way that The Ventures seem to be trying
to get into the RnR HOF, but I don't loose any sleep over it. They are
the FREAKING Ventures after all. They should be in there, no doubt about it.

It isn't the American R&R Hall of Fame. It is the Rock and Roll Hall
of Fame. Any band can be inducted. It just happens to be based in the
US. Yes, the Shadows have earned it. So many bands have but will never
be recognized. Writing great songs should get a person in but that is
rarely the case. The Rock and Roll HOF is a board made of people
playing politics. Whoever sales records and still moves a good amount
of records will make it in. Ultimately it doesn't matter. Good music
will live on despite being in a HOF for music. The HOF is just a
gigantic tourist trap.
A HOF for such a wide range of music is impossible to run and still
accomendate all of those who qualify and should be in.
If there were a Instrumental Surf Rock Hall of Fame then there would
be no questions on the bands who would be inducted.

I have to go along with what has been mentioned hear before, the Ventures live
'65 version of "Journey to the Stars" is the one to hear if you haven't heard
any of their versions.

Journey to the Stars is the absolute best. One of the best intstros
ever written. I have never heard the Ventures version, to my
knowledge, which is disappointing. I have heard the Man or Astro-Man?,
Nebulas, and Space Cossacks version of it.
And Rolling Stone is the anti-christ of the music biz magazines.

The Ventures have also been featured in a similar manner at the RRHOF
Museum, and as well, this does not mean they were inducted into the RRHOF

Hi Jacob:
Just goes to show that it pays to check the source, rather than listen to
what other bands' supporters have to say! On one of the websites, the
following is quoted verbatim from the book, "The Chantays".
"In 1994 the release of THE CHANTAYS Next Set CD rekindled the public's
interest and again gained THE CHANTAYS recognition in the music industry.
The CHANTAYS and Pipeline are featured in two areas of The Rock & Roll Hall
Of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1996 The Chantays gained further
recognition for their accomplishments by being inducted into the Hollywood
Rock Walk"
Now, (I'll be damned if I can find the site), but another blurb on a
different site, had it that both The Chantays and The Surfaris were actual
inductees. I shoulda gone direct to the HOF website and confirmed this
info, but I didn't imagine the claim would be publicly made, and false at
the same time, Mea Maxima Culpa.
The other points I raised still stand, and I stand by them.
Respectfully,

"Live in Japan '65," "The Fabulous Ventures," "Guitar Freakout" and "Batman
Theme" are all must-owns.
"Ventures in Space" has some really interesting production, but some of the
songs aren't that great. As others have said, though. if you're only going to
get one, get "Live in Japan '65."
The surf-instro hall of fame is a novel idea, but I guarantee there'd be a ton
of debate over which bands would get in, just like any other hall of fame.

Blasphemy, Jacob! I love that Ventures cover of Strawberry Fields. If that's the
Super Psychedlics album you got at the thrift store, there's some good Ventures
originals on there.

I don't think it is the worst Beatles cover ever. The Surf Coasters
version of She Said She Said is so much worse. It is a vocal version.
But the best Beatles instrumental cover ever has to be A Day in the
Life by Jeff Beck.

Ah yes, now that I revisit both versions I hear the studio has some great
spitting reverb in the intro and throughout. The live version is very present,
no reverb at all but the energy and rawness is cool. I'll have to put both
versions even for their different qualities.
