I use the following, but strings are really subjective, so you should
definitely experiment.
For a reasonably authentic surf sound on a Jazzmaster:
D'Addario Chromes 12-52
For good overall strings on a Strat:
D'Addario EXL115 nickel roundwounds 11-49
For good Shadows (British early '60s) Strat sound:
Rotosound guitar strings, mix of 12 and 13 gauge sets
(these are hard to find in the US, but sound great)
