Jonathan:
That's a good point you made re: the bassists suport of the
harmonic structure. Since I am mainly a bassist, I take
that role for granted. I forget that many guitarists don't
explicitly know what their bass player is up to...often
times there's a little more too it than simply
root/fifth/octave...
