Besides Am,Dm,Em,Fm what chords are used in surf music?

John Brownlow (pinkheadedbug) - 12 Aug 2005 20:40:17

you can also use them to move chromatically up the neck, passing
between I, II, III, IV etc

Dave,
Typical open (1st pos.) keys for guitar:
Emin, D, G, A, F, D- (the last two are a little hard
because of the Bb chord).

I'd like to ask the lead guitarists which keys let you
take advantage
of
the open position the best and give you the most
versatility?
I would think Em still ranks high on the list, but
which other keys
work
well?

DP,
That's well and good...though you gotta intelligently
resolve that sharp 5 (or flat five for a dim chord).
One shouldn't substitute willy-nilly. (Make sure the
bass player knows there's an aug or dim substitution,
as the fifth is one of the important notes that
bassists play to support the harmony -- remember those
triads!)

I like the augmented chords...they sound cool and
jazzy...
great for surf!

Jon and others, thanks for the comments. Interesting.
Dm and Am good too, yes?
I would think Ab and C# are not very conducive to open style leads
(making heavy use of opens as root or passing tones in your leads), but
I imagine it depends on how you adapt your style and scale playing (?)

Dave,
Indeed, Am is 'good' as it's the relative minor of C.
Dm as mentioned previously is good, too, though you
would have to maybe use the 1st pos. Bb barre chord in
this key (relative minor of 'F'). ('Course, you could
also use three-note chords when comping...depends on
the music and what sort of "effect" you want the
rhythm to sound (ring-y tones vs. controlled staccato
tones.)
As to Ab and C# (Db)...those are typical "horn"
keys...pretty useful when playing with a band like
"Tower of Power", but probably not something you'd use
very often in surf rock music. Avant garde surf
musicians/composers will probably prove an exception
to this "rule".

Jonathan:
That's a good point you made re: the bassists suport of the
harmonic structure. Since I am mainly a bassist, I take
that role for granted. I forget that many guitarists don't
explicitly know what their bass player is up to...often
times there's a little more too it than simply
root/fifth/octave...
