If crooning his way through "House of the Rising Sun," "Fever" and "Smoke on
the Water" isn't trying to please the crowd, I don't know what is. I hope
that's not ego driving that song selection, but who knows. I'd be happy if
he played Miserlou true to the versions of the Nissan/Dominos/Montain Dew
commercials (ie, the originals). Even those companies want the '62 version,
not a mocked up, current studio cut of the wank version he currently plays
live. But hey, you can't play a Deltones set every night to please the one
or two surf purists in the audeince and expect to book repeat gigs year ater
year at the same reputable clubs, although the hits he made 40+ years ago
(and their subsequent popular resurgence) are the reason he's able to book
shows (and fund his eventual retirement) in the first place. I just hope
his extremely talented son doesn't turn out to be an egotistical dick with
ears. He should have learned from Dusty (during his tenure) that you can be
both extremely talented and a cool dude at the same time.

DD has continued to perform his classics in a less original form, which is
frustratingly dissatisfying to his long-term fans.

If so, he loses a degree of entitlement to claim ownership of songs he no
longer performs as the audiences want him to, IMHO.
