DD deserves credit for what he did for surf music, period. this yahoo
group, hence this debate, would not even exist if it weren't for DD.
I went to see him two years ago and payed a lot of money. I thought
as a show it was an awesome show (i 4-1 like the circus!), as a music
show it was so so, and as a surf music show it sucked. Nonetheless, I
am very glad I went, I saw a monument. If he drops dead or retires in
a couple of years, those who didn't go even once will regret it. For
the very same reason I went to see the Stones in '91 (go figure!),
and recently Randy Newman, and some other old locals from Holland.
And one thing, surf is as much about 'getting the tone', as it is
about playing. And in that department, I'd still rather hear dick
playing Miserlou, then either the Surf Coasters or Slacktone. You've
gotto admit that dick still has awesome tone. Still, if Slacktone (or
any other great now band) returns to the area, I'd definetly go
again, but not so with dick dale, not for that money anyway.
BTW,in the same period I saw Brian Setzer with the '69 special
(3piece line up, no orchestra) and it was a HUGE dispointment.
beginning to end ultra fast look-at-me licks, but very undynamic,
boring and bored playing. no show element whatsoever. It got me
thinking DD at least enjoys himself while playing. If you don't enjoy
watching him play - don't go.
