Rockhouse T.O. presents Surf and Turf 3, the first hot ticket of 2011, Saturday, January 22nd at the Cadillac Lounge. Don’t miss the third annual surf and rockabilly rumble, hosted by Toronto’s Tennessee Voodoo Coupe, geared up and ready for action, with a brand new CD in their mitts. Mysterious trio The Flying Bordelos will be astounding the audience with their phenomenal surf and instrumental sounds, and no doubt dressed to kill. DJ Surfin’ Dave Faris will also be in the house to provide a sizzling mix of amped-up surf, hot rod and rockabilly tunes throughout the evening. Fire up your engines and catch the wave at the Caddy, Surf and Turf only happens once a year!
Surf and Turf 3 headliners Tennessee Voodoo Coupe are an offshoot of garage punk powerhouse Blue Mercury Coupe, although they have established their own musical blend, "100 proof reckless hillbilly jive." With BMC’s Big Rude Jake on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, and Steve Good on the doghouse bass, TVC round out their lineup with Colonel Gary Edwards on a minimal standup drum setup, and Stevie "six string" Abrams on the twangy Gretsch guitar. With this classic rockabilly arrangement, TVC tackle a broad mix of music, leaning heavily on early rockabilly, country, and some ’40s jump blues, along with some originals and a few unexpected surprises. The 4-piece crew behind the wheel have taken the Coupe for some wild rides down lost highways in search of musical gems, wowing audiences along the way, and have streamlined the vehicle into a powerful unit. In 2008, TVC launched the successful East End Rockabilly Riot series at The Dominion on Queen (including an annual weekend event), and in 2010 the group performed a steady schedule of dates across Ontario and Quebec, including an appearance at the Montreal Red Hot and Blue rockabilly weekender. They topped off the year with the release of their limited-edition CD, Live In Person, recorded live to air at CIUT 89.5FM. TVC deliver an unpredictable, high-spirited musical road-trip at every occasion.
Weighing in with their considerable surf rock chops, not to mention classy stage attire, are the elusive and intoxicating Flying Bordelos. Their shadowy backstory reads as follows: It’s 1965. On the run from hired assassins, the Flying Bordelos - Jimmy, Jenn & Rio - leave their knife-throwing and trapeze acts behind, and move north to play instrumental rock’n’roll music. Like the Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster, The Flying Bordelos are rarely glimpsed, but those who witness their unique presence will never forget the experience! Sighted onstage in the Toronto area over the last few years, at such events as the Great Lakes Surf Battle (2009 & 2010) or sharing the bill with El Vez and Los Straitjackets, The Flying Bordelos’ death-defying surf and instro rock has made its mark, and they will launch Surf and Turf 3 with a vengeance!
DJ Surfin’ Dave Faris sets the stage for the live showdown, with some wild rockabilly, surf thrills and vintage rock ‘n’ roll cuts. Faris has been a DJ since the ‘80s, including a 7+ year residency at the Cameron House (monthly Rock and Roll Riot night), and has spun at numerous events in town. He is the resident DJ at the East End Rockabilly Riot nights, and the annual Surf and Turf. Recently, Faris participated in the second annual East End Rockabilly Weekend, and has been a guest DJ on Jazz FM, CIUT, and AM740. Expect some killer surf and hopped-up rock’n’roll all night long!
