On Jazzmasters I use 13-56 flats.
On Yamaha SGs or SGV s 12-52 flats (or rounds), or 11-50
Mosrites & Hallmarks: 11-50 rounds
Jaguars normally 13-56 flats
For me the brand isnt important at all! Strings have to be cheap for my opinion!
You can say this when you re playing a good sounding old Showman or some similar killer amp!

I use 10-52's on my strat, and 11's on my Gretsch. Yeah, heavy strings have great tone, but I've been playing for over 32 years, and a few years ago thought, "What the hell am I torturing myself for? I don't need to push around huge strings." Now I'm happy with what I've got, and the audience doesn't know any better.
I've got an archtop I use exclusively for jazz gigs, and it's got 13's on it, but I use it with the understanding that string bending is going to be at a minimum.
To me, arguably the greatest compliment from another musician, especially non-guitarists, is "Hey man, you have great tone", but I assure you, 99.9% of audience members neither know, nor care about tone.

A few days ago, I put 13s Pyramid Gold flats on my Jag. I had 12s flats before for a long time. I got stunned with the 13s and now I'll hardly go back.
But I feel that the 3rd (G) string is a little bit lower in volume than the others. Is this normal? Maybe nut or saddle? I filed them a little but nothing changed.
E and B (1st and 2nd) strings are much more louder....

It´s because the nickel wound, I think. I use the same strings and I feel something similar.

On a Jag? Or another guitar?
I feel like, low E is louder than A, A is louder than D, and D is louder than G and B and E are totally different. Ok I understand about B and E, as they're different kind of strings.
I didn't have that kind of differences with 12s Chromes....
Anyone else to help? Where is Ralf?

Yes, on a Jaguar.

I find it strange... may be a defective set.

I really wanna try a set of Pyramid roundwound .11-.50.
I use DR Pure Blues .11's which are also round wound, but I think after 2 year of using those exclusively, it's time to try something new.

my latest discovery is 10-52. very cool. all the big twang you need on the basstrings and good bendability in the high department.

Pyramid roundwounds might be really expensive, I've never checked the prices. May I suggest Thomastik-Infeld's Jazz-be-bop roundwounds? They are the roundwounds I use for surf. I play DR Pure Blues .11s for all other styles though.

After reading this thread I tried some 12's on my JM and started having joint pain I am new to the JM and am trying everything and found 11's (pure nickel) a HUGE improvement over 10's that I use on my Strats (for blues and classic rock). I am now going to try some flat wound 11's. Anyone have recommendation on which set to try first?
I still am going to experiment with different brands of 11's with slight changes in mix of gauges to find something thick enough, but doesn't kill my joints.

Give 12s another shot, after you've played 11s for a while. You may not find them to be as fatiguing to play once you've toughened your hands up with 11s for a couple of months.
You would think so! I do play acoustic, though not for some time, and use 12's and 13's. But, I am not flying around as I do on my Jazzmaster. Mmmm Jazzmaster...
IS there any advantage to having a wound 3rd string? The set of 12's I had on seemed to have a more balanced response than the sets with a plain 3rd string.
Still looking for string brand advice on flatwounds.
Thanks!

I use 11s on my strat and 12s on my jazzmaster. I voted for 12s (flats, and I like d'addario chromes--cheap date, I guess) becaue I'm more likely to play the jazzer these days, especially for surf and instrumental.

I just got a pack of Rotosound Top Tape 12s and really like them. FOr some reason they dont feel as heavy as the similar D'Addario round pure nickels. I ordered a bunch of 11 pure nickel Rounds by various makers that are heavier in the middle with wound G strings to see how that goes. I think a Jazzmaster REALLY needs a wound G to sound good!

Dick Dale once again grabbed my Strat the other night and called my GHS 11s to 50s "wussy" strings.
