Surf with vocals

Hey, I just started getting into surf music, but I'm really not into any type of instrumental music, so I was wondering if you guys could recommend some bands and albums that the majority of songs have vocals on them. I guess I'm more into the poppier sides of surf like Jan & Dean, The Honeys, The Beach Boys, The Surfaris, The Rip Chords, The Rivieras, The Sunrays etc. I'd prefer "classic" bands from around the 60s. So could you guys recommend me some bands/albums? Thanks in advance! |

I know this website's more for guitar, but this section of the forum's titled "Surf Music General Discussion." I assumed that meant a discussion of anything pertaining to surf music, not just guitar-related stuff. My fault. |

Does not compute. Actually, plenty of bands from the '60s did the occasional vocal tune. They tend to pepper lots of early surf albums. It wouldn't hurt to investigate instrumental bands to look for that stuff. Personally, I hate vocal surf more than just about anything and tend to avoid it like the plague, so I haven't investigated much of what's out there. From what little I know it seems like you've got the "big" bands already. Though off the top of my head I can think of the Astronauts. They did plenty of vocals. Check this out, for example. |

Try to find a copy of The Hondells album Go Little Honda. It's got catchy vocal songs with a great production and a couple of great instrumental tunes, "Black Boots and Bikes" and "Haulin' Honda" that may change your outlook on the non-vocal side of the genre. There's probably some fan made stuff on Youtube to search and sample. — |

Check out the Trashmen. They're one of the few trad surf bands that have vocals that I like. Of modern surf bands, I really dig The Thunderchiefs' vocals. —Ryan |

I like that surfy vocal song Run Run Run on the Nuggets comp. By the Gestures. I love all kinds of music both vocal and instrumental...and I love Surf music...but...I can't think of any Surf song with vocals that doesn't make me want to poke my eardrums out with a fork. — |

What everyone else said about the Hondells. And if you can find it, The Ghouls as well. There's a lot of Gary Usher projects you might dig, like the Super Stocks, Knights, Kickstands, etc. (Okay, maybe three isn't "a lot," but still.) You might want to steer clear of the Astronauts - their vocals tend to be a lot more interesting musically than vocally. Granted, their instrumentals are well worth it, but if you prefer vocals that's probably not much of a selling point. And for more modern stuff, the Untamed Youth, Thunderchiefs and Volcanics are hard to top for vocal material.
If that's your reaction to the Fender IV's "You Better Tell Me Right Now" then I really don't know what to say. —That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it. |

let not forget the beachboys, their were the real deal just like DD or the belaires,the southbay guys came up with that surf and surfing (vocal pop) sound so it is a big part of the over all surf music sound and happy brithday unsteady freddie we are lucky to have ya LOL —Facebook pages theSupertones |

I pretty much like a lot of the Gary Usher stuff with vocals...although some of it is too "hammy" etc. This may sound odd, but if the tune is a "drag" tune with vocals I probably will like it more than a "surf" tune with vocals. Lots of the surf ones are cool, but I still dig hearing about wild mills, kandy paint, twice pipes, and so on. The one Gary Usher group that falls flat for me is The Knights. I may be one of only a few people on here like this, but I am far more of a sucker for drag music. — |
