You remember the Typhoons played Slayer`s "South Of Heaven" in an incredible version!?
I think some day we will do a side project called "Stormtroopers Of Surf" or "Surftroopers Of Death" or something like that?:D
Twang cheers from Germany!
Ralf Kilauea
Hi Ralf, can I do the poster?
I remember and have Fleetwood Mac 's Sunny Side of Heaven, a good Danny Kirwin instro from Bare Trees. Not metal but not Buckingham/Nicks either.

Hmmm... okay, that`s not a so called surf song, but have you listened to "Merciless Onslaught" from Metal Church from 1985? Instrumental killer track!
Yeah! I really like that one. Some other favorites not mentioned yet -
Trouble - "Endtime"
Solitude Aeturnus - "Beyond ..."
Cathedral - "Violet Vortex"
Pale Divine - "Morphia"
Metallica - "Orion" & "Call of Ktulu"
Iron Maiden - "Transylvania," "Genghis Khan," "The Ides of March" & "Losfer Words (Big 'Orra)"
Solstice - "Empty Lies the Oaken Throne"
Sleep - "Nain's Baptism"
The Obsessed - "Living Rain"
Death Mask - "Instrumental" (great title, up there with Motorhead's "Instro")
Grief - "Time to Face Your Chake"
Electric Wizard - a bunch, but especially "Ivixor B/Phase Inducer" & "Master of Alchemy: I: House of Whipcord/II: The Black Drug"
The Sword - "The White Sea"
These better not get posted for illegal download on a certain lame mp3 blog ...

On Welcome to the Club Live Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson do amped up versions of both _ F.B.I._ and Slaughter on 10th Avenue.
Brian May has a version of F.B.I. as well that was released on a limited edition EP.

I think I read on this site a while back that the solo from the Mastodon song Divinations is surf inspired? You can definitely hear it. In fact it's pretty damn surfy for a bit, and just friggin' cool. You know, that's the exact type of music Dick Dale claims to be making these days.

Yeah - they had the double-picked riff and the producer suggested Brent Hinds play something surfy over it. Hinds talks about it on the DVD that's part of the bonus version of the album.
God damn, that is just a great album. I haven't gotten the slightest bit sick of it yet, and it's been on steady rotation for me since the day it came out. (Except "Quintessence" - that song can go fly a kite.)

Yes! I've probably listened to this album more than any other single album since I got it. Really, I only (arbitrarily) decided to get into metal just a few months ago. I'm definitely way new to the genre, trying to figure out what I don and don't like, but I absolutely LOVE this album. It's most definitely helping me get my feet wet. Hell, I even like Quintessence, though definitely not as much as the rest of those songs.

Ok, I'll join in....

Crack the Skye is an absolutely incredible album. And I love Quintessence. This album has not left my car since I bought it. Mastodon is on another level as far as hard rock/metal bands are concerned. You picked a hell of an album to get your feet wet Ben!

Even Slash can double pick. The first part of this video sounds a little surf-y-ish, then he kind of morphs into Jimmy Page.

So does Gary Hoey fit into this tread conversation?
He had a CD "Monster Surf" or MAssive Surf" or something like that where the distortion pedal was on 12.
Hey, how about a compilation of surf bands doing metal versions of their own material. Kind of circular, ya think?

We're talking good metal, so no.

It's not a cover, but Splatterthrash by Ghoul sounded pretty surfish to me from what I remember

Johnny Thunders (former New York Doll) does a great version of "Pipeline' on his 'So Alone' release.
Raunchy enough to pass for Link !
I think Brian is right on how there's gonna be a lot of 'Pipeline's....
I've heard this--buddy of mine put it on a mix tape years ago. He also put the Ventures' live 1965 version either before or after to contrast & compare. If I recall correctly, Johnny sounded pretty weak compared to Nokie, which was quite a surprise.

Ghoul have two "surf" instros that are the most inept hackery this side of Gein & the Graverobbers.

Johnny was also strung out on heroin at the time of those recordings. Nonetheless, his version of Pipeline kicks some serious bootay!

Don't forget Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott on bass - you could do far, far worse as far as backing bands go.

Yeah! huge casting on this LP (Chrissie Hynde, Steve Mariott etc...) is anyone here know the Surf Demons? they're from the bay area metal scene, and then they want to play Surf music, with Ibanez RG's and a metal sound, not bad, i dig it, the guitarist sent some vid's on you tube and it's really amazing, they are in my top friends on myspace...

Brian
Wasn't there an interview in Guitar Player with the guitar player in Motely Crue saying he loved surf music? Or am I thinking of someone else?
Not sure about that, but didn't Nikki Sixx of The Crue allegedly "borrow" his name from Jeff Nicholson ("Niki Syxx" of Jon & The Nightriders)?
The "Twang" comp is a good one. Tony Iommi, Richie Blackmore, Steve Stevens... Do you really want to "comp" a comp, though?
Has anybody mentioned Agent Orange?
