Old_Tele_man, I recently started using a wound "G" string, size 18. I was able to buy it individually, I will check the brand when I get a chance. I immediately noticed a huge difference when I switched, much more balanced sounding.

Thanks! I'm still looking for something to replace the Fender 1550's. Maybe those D'Addario EHR370's (with separate 0.20-0.22 G) are as 'close' as I will get?

Old_Tele_man, the wound 18 G string I use is an Ernie Ball. It comes in a white and red package. I couldn't be happier with it! All the other strings are DR Pure Nickel 11-50.

Hey guys, I am torn (first world problem) about which type of strings to use. I am about to buy my first Jaguar, I am totally stoked! Anyway, I cannot decide if I want rounds of flats on it. It's a candy apple red Classic Player Jaguar, and I will have my luthier put 12 gauge strings on it (along with some Fender vintage pickups).

I have watched several videos comparing the two online, and to be honest none of them have helped me decide one way or the other. I would love some feedback from you guys, and hear what you prefer and why. Thanks for your help!

I would go .11 Thomastik flats if you are torn between the two. You will get some of the slink of the DR .12s, and you'll get the flatwound sound and a wound G that you can bend up a step if you so needed.

The .11s Thomastik flats just feel really great and you can do a lot with them. If you were set on .12 flats I'd steer you towards .12 DR Pure Blues. I have .12 flats on a Jag, I love it. But it wouldn't be my only Jag, I couldn't have .12 flats as my only Jag. .12 roundcore roundwounds and .11 Thomastik flats, I could have either as my only Jag. They are more suited to being a well-rounded string for my uses.

Thank you very much for the information, Jake. I am now leaning toward the .12 DR Pure Nickle Round Core strings. I'll post photos in the appropriate thread when I get my new Jag!

@sixstringsurfer I've had this same conflict between flats and round wounds. For flats, I've used Dadarrio Chromes and Thomastik flats, and for round wound, I've used Pure Nickle, Pure Nickle Round Core and regular round wound. I LOVE the thudyness of the flats but then I lose some presence and sting bounce off the neck that round wounds give. Currently, I'm using Pure Nickle and feel I can get the thudyness I need.

You really do have to try both and see how they interact with your playing style, your guitar and overall tone.

Thanks derekirving, I agree that I will need to test both of them out for myself. I would have to put .12 flats on though, as I cannot flip flop gauge sizes without taking it to my tech. For now I have decided to go with rounds. Cool

Yeah, one of the major headaches with TRYING out different stringsets having different gauges is that SOMETIMES the nut slots have to opened UP or narrowed which can be a major pain.

That's WHY I've stayed with the same Fender 1550's since I got my Tele...don't FIX what ain't BROKEN! But, unfortunately, Fender discontinued the 1550's back in the early 2000's...so, now, I HAVE to try something different!

My Strat is used for both my surf and my standard covers groups so I have to find a happy medium. Because it has a floating bridge, I have to assess the aggregate tension of all 6 strings in addition the gauges. String makers like TI, Elixir, D'Addario, etc all publish their string tension details. D'Addario Chromes have wild variances in tension across the 6 strings whereas TI are more uniform. The wound G on Chromes being difficult to bend seems to be caused by it being wound as well as having one of the highest tensions of any of the other 5 strings.

For my own use, I created a simple spreadsheet that I plug-in the string tensions of different makers/string sets and with a floating bridge - once your guitar is set up and you don't want to mess with it too much - you should eyeball similar aggregate tensions. For example, my Strat was setup with 11-49 D'Addario NYXLs which has a total of 116.8 lbs tension.
Some other examples
11-50 Chromes = 143.9 lbs
11-49 D'Addario half-rounds = 124.3 lbs
TI Jazz Swing 11-47 = 124.70 lbs

My Jazzmaster and Jaguar have TI Jazz Swing 12s and 13s, respectively. Love 'em. I really enjoy flats and wound Gs for surf. Chromes and TI JS are the only flats available in Vancouver shops.

My main criteria for strings are:

1) Pure Nickel material for tone/feel.
2) Wound 3rd/G-string for consistency (to match pickup pole height)
3) Ground-, Roller-, Half-, burnished finish for no finger squeak.
4) Gauges: 11, 15, 22w, 32, 40, 48 (for nut slot fit).

I'm kind of surprised I don't see even more love here for Pyramid Gold flats from the flatwound users. I've used them, Chromes, and TI Swings extensively on both Jags and Gretsches and I find the Pyramids more "alive" and aggressive-sounding than the TIs, and absolutely blow Chromes off the map for feel, clarity, sustain, and longevity (in my experience more than making up for the price difference). I just changed to Pyramid flats on my AV65 Jag and am blown away by how much better they pair with that guitar than anything else I've tried on it. And no, I have no commercial interest in them Big Razz

I will buy strings online for cost savings but I am reluctant to buy online when those same strings are not available at brick&mortar shops. I have yet to see Pyeamids at any of the retailers big and small in my area. Crappy or not, if I am in a pinch, I need to know rhat I can go to the store and get another pack rather than waiting 2 wks for them to come in cross-border.

I think I am going to try those Guadalupe custom strings as the DR .12-.52's on my Jag are very unbalanced. The .24 plain G string is too big, and the B string is too small. I am not the only one Who feels this way, I have read some reviews online that say the exact same thing. Any way to not have the awful looking red ends on the Guadalupe strings?

GTS strings do not need to have the silk wraps, it is cheaper without the wraps.

I suggest .11s for the GTS strings, they will feel more like .12 DRs. I have GTS strings on a couple Jags, ES-355, and Gretsch 6119. I'm a fan.

I'd like to try some flats on my Strat, but it's never known anything but roundwound 9-46. Will the stock nut have to be modified for 11's?

I'll second the Pyramid Gold flatwounds. I use 11's on my S-type guitar (and the only guitar I ever use). IMO they're very similar to TI Swing 11's. The Pyramid's to my ear sound 'fuller' or maybe 'richer' while the TI's seem to last longer. I can get 10-12 months of daily playing out of the TI's, maybe half that out the Pyramid's. By comparison, back in my DiAddario 11's days -- still my favorite 'regular' string company -- I'd be lucky to get a month out of them.

Oh, I forgot to answer the question! My 'Strat' is an Ibanez with a 'pre-grooved' TUSQ nut. I had to make several small mods to the nut itself to get a good, smooth fit but no adjustments were needed to the slots for the 11's. I would bet your stock Strat will fine with 11's.

Thanks for your reply. I think I'll go with the Pyramids.
