I haven't really gotten into The Hunter yet. I'm a huge fan of Mastodon's previous releases. I've listened to The Hunter a handful of times and it just doesn't blow me away like the other albums (especially Crack The Skye, which I thought was a huge leap for progressive music back when it came out.)
I'll keep giving it some spins though. So, we'll see.

Not having heard the new one, Crack the Skye is my favorite too, partially because I heard the poor guy wrote it after having his head cracked open after a bar fight (well, not directly after, in that following year when he was dealing with brain trauma). Speaking of instrumental metal, a couple from last year I really dug...
Tank 86 - Rise; it's very Sabbathy, and even gets Maiden-esque at some points:

Belzebong - Sonic Scapes & Weedy Grooves; best classified as stoner/sludge:

Right now, I'm listening to Mel Tormé's Right Now! Had it been recorded later, he might have included some heavy metal tunes.

I can't tell if the scat at the end of Strangers In the Night was sung as a joke or not: Scum-dum dada wowwwww, skee-deedy weem-deem diddy,...

I mentioned the southern staple of instro/metal/prog/math rock HEMATOVORE in an earlier post. I thought some of you Mastodon fans might be interested in checking them out. They even throw some surf influence in, as you can hear on the third video link.

With the recent chatter of the new Space Agency CD, I've had their 3 CDs (as well as the Simon Jones solo CD) in recent rotation. Great stuff.

Agreed - the first few listens made me reeeeeally not want to give it anymore chances. If Crack the Skye winds up being the only thing of theirs I like, so be it. Never really thought of them as stoner metal, to be honest ... although that classification never really made sense to me, either. Always thought of bands like Sleep and Church of Misery as being doom metal, and bands like Kyuss, Orange Goblin, etc. as stoner rock. There're some albums that kind of split the difference like Blue Sky Mind or Age of Winters, but even then they seem to fall more on one side than the other, IMO.
Jeff, the stuff of theirs I picked up on vinyl, I think I've still got the CDs hanging around here somewhere. They're yours if you want 'em.

Interesting. Crack the Sky was a pop/prog band from Baltimore in the late 70s.
According to youtube, they were still gigging as of last summer.

Ted, none of these videos do this band justice. I will try to email you some of their stuff in the next few weeks. They are a hidden gem out of Auburn, Alabama that formed in 92 and are extremely well respected in the southeastern indi circuit, despite rarely playing out of town. We will be meeting up with them for a show next week and could not be more excited. I have been friends with them for twenty years yet still hold them on a pedistal.

Ted, I believe you know the guy at Reptile Records in California. He put out the first Daikaiju album. He also put out a Hematovore record a few years ago called Nocturnal Grave Decorator.

I talked a bit with him when he purchased our EP. He seems like a pretty standup guy.

Wow that's a coincidence !
I've been listening to your albums and watching your videos a lot also.
Listening to The Thunderchiefs tricks me into thinking it's summer so I can go out in this cold weather bravely.

I finally found a copy of Real Cool Hits by The Avengers VI and I love the way they play "Hall of the Mountain King." These guys blow me away and I wish I'd have found this album years ago!
