I've been watching some of those "Classic Album" series. The one on "A Night at the Opera" was refreshing. Imagine...band members getting along, supporting and encouraging each others' participation, no egos. Unless you like drama, it's a nice story of how the album came about. It's amazing when the isolated vocal tracks are played. Freddy's alone, and then the harmony parts with the other guys--fantastic. They could have gotten by doing it all acapella. |

Prince Fatty Meets The Mutant Hifi in 'Return of Gringo!' is the fevered and frontal lobe-damaged brainchild of Nick Coplowe (The Mutant Hifi) and Mike Pelanconi (Prince Fatty), the result of years of plotting, planning, laughing and procrastinating. Put simply, it is a surf/ska/spaghetti western soundtrack album for a film that is yet to be made. Think Dick Dale jamming with the Skatalites with Morricone at the helm, including appearances from Alessandro Alessandroni (the original spaghetti western whistler) and you're in the right section at the record store, although it is possibly a very small section. —Last edited: Dec 01, 2011 12:38:24 |

Listening to the album "You Brought Us Here" by Bethany Curve. I've been in a big shoegaze mood lately, and this album especially fits that mood. This album is all guitar based, but run through so many effects and layered so heavily (not to mention completely drenched in reverb), that often it sounds like keyboards. There is vocals, but those too are drenched in reverb and effects and they become more like an instrument than anything lyrical. Perfect for rainy and/or depressing days |

Johnny Kidd & the Pirates "Best of" 2CD EMI anthology. I didn't realize how varied his music was. It's like the record company was making him a pop crooner here, and a British Invasion star the next, then an R&B singer. Hard to establish a firm identity when they do that to an artist. If he never did anything after "Shakin' All Over", he still would've left a helluva legacy. Bob —Bob |
