Permalink Tremolo and/or reverb in an amp..do you use/want/need it?

Ok, I was considering saying reissue, since it's not original, so no hard feelings.

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

I can get along pretty well without either onboard. I prefer outboard alternatives to all but a handful of in-amp reverbs (such as old Ampegs). My favorite trems are usually via pedal. The big exception is not trem, it's the maggie true pitch shift vibrato. that one is so fine, and the in-amp variety beats any outboard attempt I've heard.

The reverb/trem scene changed for me yesterday. Traded some stuff. One of the items in hand is a Victoria Reverberato. Kind of a happy accident. It's one of the outboard units I was always most curious about. I only have a few moments with it. So far, the reverb shows a lot of promise. The tube tremelo section is flat out amazing. Not sure what exactly it is, but the effect is massive, wall-shaking if that's what you want. Sounds sorta like some of the brownfaces I tried years ago, has a chorus/univibe feel in there as much as trem. It's a world away from BF/SF trem tones. Man, what a sound!

I use tremolo on a few songs in one of my bands, not at all with the other.

I'll usually bring a combo to shows for convenience, so I like having on-board reverb and tremolo for that reason. But when I get the urge, I'll bring a Fender piggy-back amp and my Weber "Tore-vibe", which has both reverb and tremolo in one outboard unit, and which sounds absolutely great. I originally got it to use with my Bassman, but I'll use it with other heads (Bandmaster, Dual Showman), even if they have trem already built-in.

This poll would have seriously benefited from having a third "neither" option... I always support the KISS rule myself, less to go wrong.

Sorry. It's a great point I agree. I was just trying to narrow it down to one or the other.

Most Sincerely,
Dario

Both should be up there.

Having your amp cook you dinner should be up there as well...

I think Eddie K's 2nd Bandmaster might actually be up for making you a potroast if ya want...

Definitely. Neither would be my choice. Less to go wrong and less $$ added to the price of the amp.

The bar on your guitar is vibrato. Vibrato changes pitch, tremolo changes volume.

It would have been helpful if you could have let Leo Fender know that a few years back Wink Isn't the Tremolux the only Fender product that's correctly labeled?

FWIW I like tremolo in an amp but find that I rarely use it. It's great if you need it for a certain song but it's not an effect that I feel comfortable switching in without preparation. Synching it to the meter of a song is not easy.

I love onboard reverb and virtually always have some cranked in, even if I'm playing Jazz. However, IMO, serious Surf sounds best with an outboard tank.
