Best tube tremolo in an amp I've heard so far is the circuit in the Fender Custom Vibrolux Reverb. It's has a fat 'organic' tremolo sound, that I really like.

Zak, do the amps that use bias vary that you listed also use bias vary in their blackface incarnations?

That's what I thought. All of a sudden in 1964 we lose harmonic and bias vary to optoisolator trem... And the Beatles had their first number one hit in America, and Gustavo Ordaz became president of Mexico. How do you look back upon 1964 with anything less than disdain Zak?

Abdul Razzaq was born in 1964. Otherwise known as Guantanamo detainee 923.

These are his crimes:
a. The detainee is a member of the Taliban.

   1. The detainee worked for the Taliban as a cook for five months prior to his capture.
   2. The detainee also worked directly for a Taliban member.
   3. The detainee received hand-on military training when he fought on the front lines against the Soviets during an earlier jihad.
   4. Upon his capture the detainee possessed a list of 24 recruits for a Taliban military unit.

Do you really think 1964 was so great now? This man is an obvious criminal. I now have serious doubts about Son House's loyalty to America. Was he cooking for the Taliban?

Ho Chi Minh sent troops into Laos in '64. Rumor has it he was a great chef. French trained... Clearly one cannot trust any cooks!

can we keep this on-topic pretty please with sugar on top thank you very much?

Dario, I dont have reverb or tremolo and I dont miss it, but Ive been seeing a lot of surf bands lately with excellent reverb sound from a stock SF twin. for me reverb would be very important in a combo (which I would buy for easy transport considerations) and not so in a top. this is all from a surf perspective, though, dont know fo other kinds of music.

I would love to see a very small and simple blonde top, one channel, one input (no. 1 of course) 2x6L6. just volume treble bass. as small as possible. a normal channel only bandmaster or bassman, so to say, preferably about the size of a reverbtank. no reverb no trem no nothing. actually, some of the kitbuilders should do a kit for these.

The late brownface amps have 6 preamp tubes. The circuit actually uses only 5 1/2 tubes as 1/2 of one isn't utilized. These 12AX7, AT7 and AU7 tubes are actually two tubes built in the same glass envelope but share a common heater (filament).

Traditional........speak softly and play through a big blonde amp. Did I mention that I still like big blonde amps?

I would love both in a nice portable combo. Especially if you could put together a 60 to 85 wt with 15" ceramic speaker, built in 3 knob reverb unit, one trem channel, ala Princeton on steroids (using brownface trem) with blond tolex and wheat grill cloth. That would be nice!

I guess for my tastes, a strong clean sound would do it for me. I almost got a Bassman because of that, but opted for a Traynor YCV80Q because it had a wider tonal range (and more volume).

I use a Voodoo Labs Tremolo, Line 6 Echo Park, Line 6 VerbZilla.

I have a 63 RI Fender reverb tank but it sits in my closet. I just can't get used to the sound of it.

No, absolutely not. The bias vary tremolo was exclusive to the brownface amps. Fender deemed it to expensive and time-consuming to produce, getting rid of it brought the component count down significantly.
Take a look at the Fender Amp Field Guide and notice how many preamp tubes those amps had!

word.

I have not messed much with ny trem other than the bar on the guitar, I think I will try the outboard type eventually, but for now I use the onboard reverb and a outboard unit combined.

I guess those pre-amp tubes raise the cost of amps, eh Dario?

I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

Bassmans aren't really clean. I find they break up nicely at the tolerable volume levels.

The bar on your guitar is vibrato. Vibrato changes pitch, tremolo changes volume.

It would be my guess that it isn't as much the tubes as it is wiring in several new circuits into the amp. That much more that could go wrong and that you have to get right.

I would use the tremelo on my amp if it worked. I need it fixed, but just haven't gotten around to getting it done. I've used the Boss Tremelo pedal for a bit, but it was awful IMHO. Barely affected the tone.

I could care less if an amp comes with reverb because I prefer the sound of the tank. Even if I wasn't playing instro/surf, I prefer the reverb from the tank.

I found that the Bassman didn't break up nearly as bad as my short lived Fender FrontMan 100 and I don't tend to play loud enough to actually break up the amp any way.

From all the amps I tried the week I spent looking, apart from the Traynor, the Bassman had the cleanest sound for low to mid-volumes. Had I not found the Traynor, I'd have came home with the Bassman in a heartbeat.

I'd probably own some sort of Fender amp if they had DI's on them. Makes it easier for recording I find.

I bought my son a Fender GDEC 30 for Christmas and was surprised at how good it sounded. It's even got a 'Surfs Up" patch that's not too bad.

Jake, today I tried the TR-2 by Boss, it wasn't any better than my Blackface tremolo. I have yet to find a Guyatone that I can try.

You technically don't have a blackface amp. You have a blackface reissue. Sorry, but not really the same thing. And make sure it is the Guyatone FLIP series VTX. Big orange thing with a tube in it.
