When I'm not playing surf music, I'll be playing either Jazz standards, or "free" jazz. The new USK drummer & I have a duo playing avant guard-ish versions of Mancini tunes (our first show is at the Al Whittle theatre in Wolfville next weekend). I also work on playing my lap steel (Country swing, Jazz, experimental?) More often than not though, I'm playing my ukulele! Rev —Canadian Surf |

I was "trained" classically. Nylon strings with fat necks, I love and respect that stuff, but I don't have the time (or patience) to pursue it anymore. So, I play surf about 60% of the time when I play music now. Otherwise you will find me playing punk rock or an Irish tenor banjo. The later option is not too far from surf in that it is flat-picked and the music is entirely based on melody (although it can be used to accompany vocal songs). -km |

I play surf tinged psychobilly in a band. This is the only "real" band that I play in. All my other stuff is just one man projects like my surf project, my punk project (which has random surf breaks), and my country project. So live, I play 70-80% psychobilly the other 20-30% being surf, metal, punk, ska, polka, whatever, and that's all the same band. By myself, golly, depends on my mood. Like I said, it's mostly punk. I've been playing a lot of acoustic/indie-type stuff lately, but what I'm most used to is punk music in the vein of The Ramones and The Misfits. |

I do like a lot of Punk Rock like the Dead kennedys, The Misfits, The Cramps, also some Heavy Metal, but I haven't really listen to any in some time now. I like Jazz, although I can't play it, but I can fake it. There seems to be a connection between surf and punk. I also play punk rock; old style, very much influenced by The Ramones: www.myspace.com/70luvunvihannekset I'm not really active in other genres now and that suits me fine - surf and punk are the styles that I'm most interested anyway. I like certain types of classical music very much, and sometimes I play some classical too. But I'll never perform anything in that genre. —It's go-go, not cry-cry. |

I've been playing rockabilly since the early 80's, so that's what I still do when taking a break from Surf. Also keep trying to play lap steel and keyboards. And now I listen mostly to exotica, twist, and a lot of forties to early sixties R'n'B (basically black R'n'R) nº1 in my personal top-20 this week: Fire Baby, by Jack Hammer — |

I'm a big Jack Hammer fan and it's great to see I'm not the only one here! The CD was released by Belgian label Marginal Records and limited to 500 copies which could explain why it's now starting to get expensive. I can also really recommend Hammer's 1960 "Rebellion" album for anyone into beatnik sounds. — |

My alter-egos are bluegrass (5 string banjo and guitar) and Traditional Irish & Irish harp music played on guitar, like Turlough O'Carolan. Kind of all over the place. |
