I'm trying to confirm songwriting credits for the song "Steel Pier." It was originally done by The Impacts with Wayne Martin Brown as the composer, correct? Or was it someone else?

Thanks!
-Mike

The Nebulas credited it to W.M. Brown.

I'm back playing keys and guitar with Combo Tezeta

And they got it from us. hahaha!
We based our more on the Surf Teens version and they also credit it to W. M. Brown.

Cool - thanks, guys.

Didn't the Sir Finks do it too?

Here's a scheme for looking up things like this that works for a lot of songs. I'm not sure if it's universal. Go to All Music and search on the title with search type song.

It returns:

...
The Impacts Berryhill ... Listen Now! Wipe Out! Buy Now! 1962 Rock
Composed by: Berryhill, Patrick Connolly, James Fuller, Ron Wilson
The Impacts Wayne Mar ... Listen Now! Wipe Out! Buy Now! 2005 Rock
Composed by: Wayne Martin Brown
...

The table above and the next are fairly seriously munged by cutting and pasting. The originals are fine, If you hover over the cells they expand, etc. Once you have a name, you can also search on that and click on the songs tab to see their credits:

Title Artist Album

...
Listen Now Steel Pier The Original Surfaris Bombora! Buy Now!
Listen Now Steel Pier Satan's Pilgrims Soul Pilgrim Buy Now!
Listen Now Steel Pier The Surf Teens Surf Mania Buy Now!
Listen Now Steel Pier The Impacts Wipe Out! Buy Now!
Listen Now Unstoppable Walter Williams Insight of a Wizzard Buy Now!

There's also a "credits" tab, so it's all quite useful.

One thing to watch out for is that these lists seem to conflate different artists by the same name, which is less of a problem if the name is fairly long or unusual. If it's Bruce Smith, watch out. The database is only as good as its input and data entry process, too, of course. And sometimes there are mysteries in the tables which may or may not resolve if pursued in this source.

Sometimes composer information is also in John Blair's book.

Always worth checking credits on original publications, too, of course.

Yeah, we did. It was released on a split 7" single with the Italian band, I Cosmonauti. Trying to get everything finalized for the Get Hip retrospective and that was the one tune we were lacking credits on.

yes - we got the credits from SP - never could figure out if it was Wm (short for William) or W.M. - anyhoo, there's some vhs documentary floating around with Merrill Frankhauser hosting a cable access show in the early/mid 90s where he and various bands "play along" with classic surf songs..'cept all their instruments are unplugged and they're just miming along with them. Anyhoo, there is a brief discussion between Merril and Martin (Brown), the Impacts steel guitar player about how his (Martin's) song was being covered by bands such as The Finks at the time.

Actually Jim, you spelled the name wrong. It's Merrell Fankhauser, and a quick search on YouTube will yield DOZENS of episodes of his show.

Interesting: moderately

Embarrassing: definitely

This one in particular makes my skin crawl the same way that video of Leonard Nimoy singing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins song does.

I can't help but ponder what other covers Leonard was kicking around when trying to come up for material. At what point do you say, you know what, I really need to cover the The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. That was truly frightening Shocked

... and it's not even his "Wipe Out."

That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

You guys remember the 2girls1cup reaction video craze?

I'm gonna start a SG101 Merrell Fankhauser reaction vid thread.

What gave me the idea was the fact that I caught myself scowling. I wouldn't have noticed it except I realized my face doesn't contort anymore than it was by 3 minutes into that one Zak put up.

How does that bullshit find its way on stage with Willie Nelson?

You made it three minutes into that one? Mister, you're a better* man than I.

that stuff ( wont call it music) is sooo much worse than 2 girls and 1 cup.

Smile This is kinda Off Topic, but I was just wondering about something. I was watching my SPs DVD earlier and I never noticed but on the back of the case it says (Stretch) under the title "Morpheus". I always assumed it was their song. But who's the original artist who plays this song?

The Deadbeats

Morpheus is by The Toads.

Smile Oh, OK thanks Brian. I like the title to that song, isn't it the Greek god of sleep or dreams or something like that? Eh whatever it sounds cool.
