Dick Dale- King of the Surf Guitar The Ventures-Gold

Sonichris
I also like to think that all early 60's fender equipment is happy to be playing surf music again. After all, its the music it was meant to play.

That's only two. Haven't you heard any surf other than Dick Dale? You should listen around and buy some cd's. Hmmm Idea

Wooza,
you mean there is more to surf than DD and the Ventures?

At this moment, these 10 albums happen to me:

  • Super Stocks / Surf Route 101
  • Lively Ones / Surf Drums
  • Surfaris / Play...
  • Richie Allen & The Pacific Surfers / Surfer´s Slide
  • Hollywood Tornadoes / Bustin´ Surfboards
  • Chantays / Pipeline
  • Astronauts / Competition Coupe
  • Aki Aelong & The Nobles / Come Surf With Me
  • Sandals / Endless Summer
  • Challengers / K39

... but I might never live with only these 10!

There´s a still recent reissue of the Jim Messina & The Jesters / The Jester LP (on vynil with the original cover) on the the spanish label Wha-Wha Records.

I have seen several of them in the last years.

Did you A/B test them against other records? Laughing

Yes, and I published my results in a peer reviewed journal. But seriously folks, in a couple of ways I have A/B'd the albums in my list with others. I have a purdy large surf collection and these are the ones that get played most often so they have sort of won out by A/Bing with other albums.

The Ventures Batman album is one that I have done many audio quality A/B tests on comparing it in various CD versions from Japan, U.S. and the U.K. There is no good stereo issue CD of the album. One Way is the only label that realized the stereo master the other labels used was in very poor shape so they found a good mono master. That one sounds the best but it is unfortunate 'cause the album needs to be heard in stereo.
I'm guessing this sound quality discussion belongs on another SG101 forum.

"Hello Girls!"

I have Ventures in Space on both CD and vinyl. The remixed (!) EMI CD reissue sounds sterile and dull, and totally different to the much more lively Dolton mono vinyl. And no, I'm not a vinyl snob.

I do, they were the only two I liked every song on, every band and some records:

The Duo-Tones: Surf Music Unplugged (especially Last Night in Waikiki
Dick Dale-Surfer's Choice, King of the Surf Guitar
The Ventures-Gold, The Ventures
The Challengers-Killer Surf!
The Surfaris-Wipe Out
Random Stuff by: The Treblemakers, Jan and Dean, the Beach Boys, and the Chantays.

I'll agree the remixed CD sounds sterile in comparison to the lp but that's the way I like it. When I'm in the studio listening to a master tape, I'm hearing purdy close to what was layed down. In the studio, the recording is not further softened by the compression necessary in the vinyl transfer. It is not getting the nostalgic pops and ticks or the crosstalk that occurs naturally in record grooves and all the other good things that add up to what many call "warmth". The master tape as heard over studio monitors is as sterile as it gets. I was excited to hear that remix CD knowing that it was not given a "for vinyl" mix" but something closer to what the Ventures were hearing when they laid down the tracks.

Which one?
The Ventures used Mosrites between 1963 and 1967, they first started using them on the In Space LP, which was released January 1964.

Kman1 might be refering to "Knock Me Out" which has the three Mosrite's on the cover. There are other Ventures albums that have Mosrites on the cover but I think that one has them featured most prominently.

I'd also recommend the Jim Messina & the Jesters "Dragsters" record, if you're a Dick Dale fan you MUST find this record. Insanely intense.

I picked up "Dragsters" and this is definately a must have. I would highly recommend picking it up.

One can wonder if the EMI reissues in the first place were remixed due to the lack of good condition master tapes or if they just thought they could "improve" the original mix. I really hope it wasn't the latter.

I simply want to hear a reissued album as close as possible to what the original record sounded like. A lot of the magic in the 60's sound will be lost by excluding the mastering techniques of the time.

T H E ✠ S U R F I T E S

I think EMI was indeed attempting to "improve" the stereo mixes when they remixed from the multi-tracks for those 4 or 5 Ventures CD's. The drums were no longer all on one channel. They were apparently trying for a more natural stereo seperation but I'll agree that the hard seperation of the '60's had its charm.

On the EMI "Ventures In Japan '65" CD the instruments sound radically different than they did on the original Japan lp (original title "All About the Ventures").

I like the newer mixes because they bring out different sounds. Then again, I prefer the colorized version of the first season of "I Dream of Jeannie".
