Hello all....
I have always loved surf music, but I have never really gotten involved until recently, I have mostly been into punk rock, and my record collection mostly reflects punk! I want to buy some albums, but I would like your input. So here goes..
If you could own 10 surf albums and no others, which ones would you definately have to have.

For "classic" surf, if I was just starting out, I'd look for compilation albums that have a variety of the standard surf tunes by the original artists. Things like "The Best of 60's Surf", "Rock Instrumental Classics-Vol.5 Surf", "Revenge of the Surf Instrumentals", etc. These comp albums, which were very plentiful in the mid/late 90's are getting harder to find. Check the Amazon, Spinout and Double Crown sites (among others) to see what's currently available. The Pulp Fiction movie soundtrack is good to have as well. I'm a big Los Straitjackets fan, particularly their earlier (non-vocal) albums, but it isn't exactly pure surf. Same with The Ventures. But The Ventures were a HUGE influence on us older guys and they covered several surf songs.
For "modern" surf, what is normally referred to as Third Wave, we all have our favorites, but here are a few of mine:
The Volcanos - Surf Quake
The Space Cossacks - Interstellar Stomp
The Space Cossacks - Tsar Wars
Satan's Pilgrims- Satan's Pilgrims
The Penetrators - Kings of the High Speed Weekend
The Penetrators - Locked & Loaded
The Blue Hawaiians - Live at the Lava Lounge
Slacktone - Into the Blue Sparkle
Susan and the Surftones - All the Beat...All the Best LIVE
Swingin' Creepers! (Ventures tribute) - various artists
There are zillions of other surf albums out there. Happy hunting!!!

The Mariners (1964-68, 1996-2005)
The Hula Hounds (1996-current)
The X-Rays (1997-2004)
The Surge! (2004, 2011-2012)
Various non-surf bands that actually made money (1978-1990)

I could not even imagine only being able to own 10. But if 10 was it, maybe I'd choose:
Jim Messina & His Jesters - Dragsters
The Huntington Cads - Introduce the New Sound
The Madeira - Carpe Noctum
The Fathoms - Fathomless
The Astronauts - Movin' (Japanese best of)
The Bambi Molesters - Dumb Loud Hollow Twang
Laika & The Cosmonauts - The Amazing Colossal Band
The Nebulas - Nebula One
Satan's Pilgrims - Plymouth Rock
The Treble Spankers - Hasheeda
Wow, that was hard!

Hey thanks you guys! These sound like a great place to start. I have most of the Man or Astroman discography covered. I have always been a big fan of MOAM. They are the main reason I am so interested in surf. But now that I have been visiting SG101, I am realizing that there are a ton of great surf bands out there. Of course I have listened to the Ventures, Dick Dale and all of the classics, but hearing bands like the Surf Coasters & Satans Pilgrims, has really gotten me hooked.

I have to HIGHLY recommend the Lost Legends Of Surf Guitar Vol. 1-4. Those are FANTASTIC comps, and will introduce you to a ton of 1st wave bands.
They are all available on Amazon.

Both Slacktones of course and any one of the many best of the Surf Coasters is good, and Torquays Somewhere in California is most excellent.

I apologize for bringing this up again. Im sure this topic or very similar has been discussed before. I guess I could have just asked where should I start out. To me discovering new music and artists I have never heard, new favorite bands, locating hard to find rare records is just so exillerating.
P.S. This is a great forum, and everyone here has some great advice, as well as a vast amount of knowledge.
Keep it up!!

How rare is this record?
I think the original 60s version of the vinyl LP is quite rare, or if not rare, at least very expensive. There was a reissue with a cheezy cover in the late 70s or early 80s which probably isn't as pricey I found a double CD featurng this album and Adrian & The Sunsets from one of the british mail order sites (Bomp mail order maybe) within the last 2-3 years. The Jesters material is well worth the currency conversion and overseas shipping, although I think I got some other stuff too.
