consisting of Unsteady-Wood unleashed a major throttling of reverb onto NYC last might. It was called like, "The Beach Bounce," or something. I could go on about the bands, the reverb, the go-go-ing bikini girls. I just knew before hand that if I went to Otto's Shrunken Head, a show promoted by Unsteady Freddie and Frank Wood would kick ass. The two headed monster did indeed deliver. The coolest thing is that the place was packed all night! Most of the other surf bands hung out till the last surf band played, very rare these days. People not associated with any band, pedestrians, civilians, if you will, danced in the little space they could find in the back of the packed room. Where the hell did digging the pure friggin' joy of the moment ever come from in NYC, of all places? This was the first time I've seen a crowd so willing to dance to 180 bpm for most of the night. I haven't been to a show associated with Unsteady for a little while. I must say, the NYC surf scene that has been so well cultured by Unsteady all these years has definitely grown and matured. I can't wait to see Freddie's next show this coming Saturday. Who ever it is, I know its going to be F'in great.

I'll second what Bill said! When I first started going to see surf/instro shows around NYC, the only way I knew they were happening was to check listings or check every bands' websites. Thanks to Freddie and other great people like Mike Rosado of 9th Wave and his great organization, NESMA a genuine, thriving scene has emerged in a city not famous for producing this kind of music.
Also want to send some praise out to Marbles Mahoney of Strange But Surf, who hosted the fantastic Twangstock at his house in Levittown yesterday. He brought in six bands, invited strangers into his house, and there was free food and beer. What a guy!
Between Twangstock and Ottos I saw 8 surf bands yesterday - thanks to everyone who made it possible (and I'll post the video I shot soon!).

I'd like to thank Unsteady Freddie, the Otto's crew and especially NESMA for making me/us feel so welcome.
I had just driven 12 hours on about 4 hours sleep after playing a gig the night before in Kentucky with the Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute, Second Helping. Despite falling asleep at dinner, I was pumped to play Sunday night with Hang Daddy. I had a blast and the audience and other band members were extremely kind to us. Thank you.
Even though I was wiped, I just had to hang out for the later acts and I have to say I was not disappointed. The 9th Wave and the Sea Devils were fantastic, and the little I heard of the Venice Beach Muscle Club while loading in was a delight.
I'd never seen so many Fender Reverb Units in one place, and I have to confess to sneaking peeks around the backs of them to see if they were reissues like mine! Ha!
It seemed like a small intimate scene at Otto's but by no means a closed cliquish one. I look forward to playing at Otto's again on the 20th and meeting more NYC Surf bands. Thanks everyone. See you then.
