THE VENTURES as seen through the eyes of VH-1

Ugh! Why??? Rolling Eyes

Better, the question should be: Why isn't Dick Dale in the Hall of Fame???
Cool

Vince

Just curious. Is your "Ugh! Why???" in reference to The Ventures, The Hall of Fame, or the fact that they are being inducted?

~Rip-Tide~

Well. . . kinda both. First, the Rock Hall of Fame is a joke--mostly a
bunch of self-congratulatory nitwits who make rock and roll out to be
something more than it is. Rock is simply fun music--nothing more.
It should NEVER be taken as seriously as some (read: BILLY JOEL
and his ilk) make it out to be. (He acceptance speech was embarrassing.)

Secondly, of all the instrumental bands and artists, why The Ventures???
Don't get me wrong--I LIKE the Ventures, but wouldn't you say Dick
Dale should be honored before them??? I dunno. . . maybe it's just me.
Confused

Vince

Is this something you can share with the rest of us, Amazing Larry?!?

Not sure if this gonna work, but Brian, thanx for getting me back on the Forum (long story). Confused

Just curious Vince if you have ever listened to Live in Japan '65 or Ventures in Space?

"It starts... when it begins" -- Ralf Kilauea

Vince,

I agree with you on the RRHoF.

I also agree with you about rock and roll, and feel that it applies to music in general. To me, music should be fun and is meant to be enjoyed, not to cure cancer or bring world peace. Before I start a holy war with other readers, let me just say that is my opinion. I think that is one reason why I have developed an appreciation for AC/DC, their music has no special agenda, just kick-a** rock and roll.

I fully agree that Dick Dale should be recognized for his work, especially while he is still here.

As for The Ventures... well, I grew up with their music. My dad had their Telstar album, and at 10 years old I fell in love with that style of music. I was blessed with parents who exposed me to various types of music, from classical to Herb Alpert and the TJB, to The Ventures, and even a duo known as Homer and Jethro. They never tried to influence what I listened to. My first album was Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs Little Red Riding Hood, following by the second Monkees album, More of the Monkees. To be honest, some of the music that The Ventures did in the 70's I don't care for. They adopted a fuzz sound at some point that I didn't particularly like, compared to their previous work.

Over the years I have added many of The Ventures albums to my collection. Their music is the singular reason why I wanted to learn guitar. I guess that is why I am so glad to see them recognized by the RRHoF. Plus, I am hoping that their music will be showcased during the live show on VH1 Classic on Monday, March 10th, so that many people who have never even heard of them will get some exposure to their music and maybe see how great it is.

I would say that surf music is my first love, but I also really enjoy AC/DC, KISS, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, etc. My musical taste is eclectic. I like just about everything from AC/DC to ZZtop. In between you will find artists like The Osmonds, Ozzy Osbourne, Led Zepplin, and Def Leppard.

I love the music of the 60's, 70's, 80's, and some of the 90's and current. I seem to have two categories of music: music I can skate to, and music I can listen to.

When I started learning guitar a couple of years ago, I also started buying several guitar magazines. Those magazines exposed me to groups and musicians I had never heard of. Most of the magazines are published in the UK, and for some reason they didn't seem to have a real high opinion of The Ventues, but they frequently mentioned a group called The Shadows with reverence. Even though I considered myself a "man of the world" I had never even heard of The Shadows. The same with Joe Satriani. So I made it a point to find some music by The Shadows and Joe Satriani to see what I had been missing, and was impressed by both.

As long as I keep discovering and doing more things for the first time and less things for the last time, I'll be ok.

~Rip-Tide~

not just DICK DALE should be inducted, but certainly LINK WRAY as well

Ferenc, that's exactly why I posted the link to VH1 re: the VENTURES!!

Admittedly, no, I have not. Embarassed

Will they want to make me chuck my Dick Dale albums out the window?

Well you really should listen to at least those two albums before dismissing the Ventures.

anybody not convinced that the Ventures should be in the Hall of Fame is
uneducated idiot if you ask me. Lame

As for Link Wray he should be on the Hundred dollar bill too. Guitar

I was curious about the induction process so here is a link to the requirements for induction
http://www.rockhall.com/inductees/induction-process/

It's similar to the Academy Awards, as each catagory has its voting members. Votes are cast by those members. It is really a self-congratulatory event as the public has no vote.

just finished watching the VENTURES get inducted into the R+R H of F - and it just moved me to see the guys up there, and playing their hearts out

bravo, dudes!

a great moment; 'bout time they got their due

Well, I wouldn't say that I am dismissing them--in fact, as I said before,
I LIKE them, but I just think Dick Dale (and, say, The Shadows, the
Centurions, et al.) are better.

But then, that's just mho. Wink

Vince
p.s. That said, I AM glad that an instrumental group was at least
recognized. When was the last time THAT happened--when Duane
Eddy was inducted (back in the 1980s, I think)?

Hey, I resemble that remark! Wink Laughing

By-the-way, you list your home as Mechanicsburg--as in Pennsylvania?
I lived in Harrisburg for a couple years. In fact, I have an aunt who
lives in Mechanicsburg. I miss that area.

best band in the world..ever!!

I missed the Ventures, but I'm watch the DC5 right now. I hope the show gets repeated or ends up on YouTube.
