another well-balanced SURF-ROCK SHINDIG is now behind us; 4 great bands playing some spectacular surf rock last night
THE TRITONS came up from Maryland; since the last time they performed there, their playing has intensified dramatically!! The baritone surf sound is wonderful live, some serious low low low notes being hammered out. I thought they were just fantastic. Can't wait to have them back.
REVEB GALAXY (also from Maryland) then came up and, simply stated, kicked some serious surfin' ass!! I appreciate that they gave me a pair of their outer-space goggles!! And they brought their Judy Jetsonish go-go dancer with them, Neptuna. This band when I first worked with them in Virginia in 2004 were already a great live act (then known as Mega-Tsunami). Now, fuggedaboutit!! They played a lot of new tunes from a forthcoming CD (I think they are trying to release it next month?). WOW did these gentlemen play one Hell of a set! Some intense double-guitar double-picking goin' on with Joe and Art playing off each other. Unbelieveable! Had the place beggin' for more.
MISTER ACTION & THE BOSS GUITARS played a great set of trad surf (drummer Mister Action/Mike was the SUPERTONES' original drummer, for those not in the know). They love to grab a lot of 60's pop/rock hits and 'surf' 'em up. The crowd ate it up, singing the lyrics to the songs they were familiar with. A fun-time party band, always give a great show. Never let me down. A NYC scene band you can always count on.
VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB has returned to playing live, and they closed out the show. MICHAEL SANDLIN who is one of the 2 guitarists in the SEA DEVILS is now a permanent member there too, but as bass guitarist. TODD MARTIN plays drums for both bands, incidentally. Now EVAN DAWSON on lead played, as usual, a wide range of tunes (did I hear LAWRENCE WELK's 'Malaguena'?), and some reeally tasty licks!! You never know what this band is gonna pull out of their repertoire.
And if that wasn't enough, members of REVERB GALAXY and VENICE BEACH MUSCLE CLUB put together an 'unsteady surf-beat jam' to finish off the night, playing some double-lead versions of some surf-beat gems and classics. The music finally came to a close at 3 a.m.
People were dancing on the brand-new floor at OTTO'S SHRUNKEN HEAD all the way through the evening. Mayhem! I can safely say everyone left with a smile on their face!

we hbad another great time at the SURF-ROCK SHINDIG
special thanks to OTTO's and their great staff (including FRANK WOOD at the door),
and,
the 4 bands who played their hearts and reverb tanks out!!
SURF + TURF and THE RECRUDERS played for the first time at a SHINDIG -- and both bands were quite impressive. SURF + TURF had an entourage of fans who came along and really added to the party atmosphere.
THE OCTOMEN led by the lightning speed twang of RATTLESNAKE RALPH again just slayed everyone in the house. And what a joy yo have the SHARKSKINS back, with their new bass player and drummer. They NEVER EVER EVER fail to give a killer set.
Here's an e/mail from Buddy of the SHARKSKINS I just got,
Just wanted to drop you a line thanking you for putting us on the bill last night. We had a blast! Otto's is always one unique venue to play - fer sher. We really enjoyed all of the bands too. My personal favorites were the Octomen. Ralph is an awesome talent! I really dug his tone - great player! Anyway thanks again and have a groovy summer! May you be blessed with the Everlasting reverb!

just getting home from 8 hours of killer non-stop surf instro at OTTO's SHRUNKEN HEAD
special thx to 8 bands who hung in there with me, and to OTTO's and its great staff
man the place was wall to wall to wall to wall
Blue StingRaye was amongst the crowd, and I think she wants to do a re-cap review so I will defer to her (she said Monday or Tuesday?)
SUMMER HAS STARTED
and I wish you ALL a very happy healthy surfy SUMMER OF 2008
I'm exhausted to say the least, but I gotta do this more often!!
this SURF-ROCK SHINDIG was a blast from first note to last
and what's so cool it started at 610 pm and ended at 210 am -- in other words, all the bands cooperated, helped each other on and off stage, shared equipment, and made it work smooth for me to keep things flowing, and we stayed "on the clock"
I have so much gratitude.....
gotta go crash out
