That was excessively violent and completely unnecessary. I loved it.

only thing i been reading lately is Terry Pratchett books... wish they were longer though:)

I wanna play just like him when i grow up...

I just started the new Haruki Murakami book "After Dark". So far, so good -- he has a knack for really sucking readers in.

Time to bump this thread back up there...I'm reading Fateful Triangle by Noam Chomsky right now.

Atlas Shrugged. The longest, most arduous book ever. It's REALLY good, tho. I'm beginning to understand that it's not for everyone, but I'm really enjoying it. Now.... if I could only finish it....

I read "Atlas Shrugged"...but, only once!... spent some time with some of Ayn Rand's works one year, trying to get a handle on the "objectivist" point-of-view...what a monster of a book!

I really enjoyed the Fountainhead: the book was cool, but the Gary Cooper movie was way better for me.

I spent some time reading Rand's non-fiction stuff too: "The Virtue of Selfishness" and "For the New Intellectual" seemed to stand out for me...

In the end, however, I found that Obectivism and Ayn Rand weren't really my cup of tea...

The objectivist thing is a little intense, to be sure. I just like that it has this whole libertarian spirit about it. I like that the book seems like some sort of strange 'stream of consciousness' feeling that I find infectious. It's an idea book, and for that I'm really enjoying it. I'm not sure if I'll go back to Rand for a while, but when I do, I'll check out the books you recommend, dp.

Finishing up A World of Difference by Harry Turtledove. USAmericans and Soviets get to Mars at nearly the same time, meet native martians, set in the 1970s or thereabouts.

I usually prefer his longer, multi-volume series, like the Worldwar/Colonization series, where lizard-like aliens invade Earth in the middle of WWII. They have better stuff but aren't very good at using it.

Next will be David Weber's At All Costs
Part of the Honor Harrington series.
She joins the Royal Manticoran Navy and ends up running it several novels later. As a tactician, she could kick Kirk and Picard's combined butts. Ripping space-opera yarns.

That would be Admiral/Lady/Dame/Duchess/Steadholder Harrington, to you.

I'm not a complete idiot. Some parts are missing.

Great book. I do, however, have to disagree with the "most arduous" label. Go down to your local library and just LOOK at James Joyce's "Finnegan's Wake". I am a ridiculously fast reader and it still took me two months to get through that book. And why is it that the first sentence in the book isn't capitalized??? Because it's a run-on from the LAST sentence of the book; technically when you reach the end you're supposed to start over.

I just finished some Raymond Carver (I'm taking an entire seminar on him this semester), I'm finishing up my Bukowski collection, and I'm also reading a bunch of poetry by William Blake for my Age of the Romantics class.

Smile I think the problem is that I'm a HORRIBLE reader. I never read as much as I should have growing up, so I'm SLOW. I am, however, a sucker for a good story, so I'll take the plunge where I see possibility.

For someone that reads as fast as you do, literature classes must be fantastic. Where do you go to school? I graduated from SFSU. I notice that you are in SF. (Not to stray off topic).

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, what an amazing book=)

The reality is that we do not wash our own laundry - it just gets dirtier.

Wow. Well, I certainly know who to go to for book recommendations. I got my BA in Cinema/Animation in '04. Small world, I suppose. Good luck!
