thought I would start some preliminary discussion with Canadian surf bands who are members of this wonderful forum
(and also American, and maybe even overseas surf artists too)
here's why....
As many people are aware, I do two internet radio shows, TWANG SHEBANG (essentially all surf, but I have moved the walls out somewhat at times), and YourSpace Radio (every shows has surf, but it's an all-genres show); both shows stream from www.myrealbroadcast.com
My Program Director is Dan Coleman, and he is a resident of Montreal, Canada. (He is also webmaster for the radio sites, and the sister site, www.myrealtalent.com).
We were talking yesterday about doing a 'Surf Festival' in Montreal in 2008. He suggested we consider June 24th b/c it is 'Quebec National Holiday' (Fete Nationale de Quebec); a/k/a St. Jean-Baptiste Day.
So, I thought I would throw that out here, to get an idea what surf bands are in the region, or not far away, and if there's any interest. We are also considering the inclusion of rockabilly and garage bands....rather than making it "all-surf"....but that still is too far off.
Any band that would like to jump on this quickly, write me off-line, schizofredric@yahoo.com.
Otherwise, we are open to suggestion, and folks....please provide info on any Canadian surf bands that are active that you think would be cool to be part of this special event.
Thx,

First, excellent idea! I'm there. Sadly, just in the audience, but I'm there.
I'd suggest you don't do it on St. Jean-Baptiste Day, because that is only a holiday in Quebec. If you do it on a regular weekend or Canada Day weekend, you'll have a better chance of drawing people from Ottawa, Toronto, etc.

Freddie,
you might want to talk to some of the bands that are on this event that happened last summer, and tie in with their event.
poster about half way down the page.

Freddie was invited to the Surf Battle, but was unable to attend because his own show fell on the same date. Perhaps in '08!?

Mario here, from Toronto surf band, the Eradicators, and close confidant (in the style of Clark Kent, Peter Parker) of Blue Demon No 9...
Here's a link to the Eradicators' myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/theeradicators
And here's a link to the Blue Demons myspace page, run by Blue Demon No 1:
http://www.myspace.com/thebluedemons
The "Great Lakes Surf Battle" has been held the first weekend in June for the past two years... you oughta come up for a vist then!
But anyway, I'm sure the Eradicators would make the trip to Montreal, no problem! But maybe Toronto may be a bit more, well, central, which should P-off all the rest of the Canadians on this site...
Give my regards to Frankie and everybody at Otto's Shrunken Head, great guy and great club!
Best regards,
Rio

Next time I WILL go to Montreal. I became sick on this last trip, but from aside from that, my plans weren't solid. We should get a group of us to go. I'll rent a car or we can take the train

It sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately Montreal is 16hrs away for us, but who knows?

I am re-thinking the date, based on comments here, and suggestion off-line
First of all, that date Dan suggested in a Tuesday....although a Canadian holiday in that area...for some, it's still a work day
also it makes no sense to make it too close to the Battle 2-Day Event, right?
in 2008, are plans set up for this yet?
I will stay clear of it
so, let me see what Dan Coleman is thinking (he is in Montreal, after all)....we'll get back to ya with a date or 2
any suggestions? always open to that
bottom line question: do people think this is something for me that is worthwhile to pursue?
thx

Freddie - I know that Francois really wanted you there this year because his band drove out from Alberta to be at the Surf Battle.
I'm not sure how to gage relevance or importance for you other than this: it is one hell of a fun weekend in Toronto and that's why I go! In terms of promoting, there are already people in town that take care of the booking and setting up the event.

Montreal is in Quebec, about a 5 hour drive from Toronto.
I think the guy to talk to (at least on this site) about the rock'n'roll scene in Montreal is Zak of the Treblemakers, who is also in a couple of other bands. He should be well placed to tell you about the scene in Montreal, and whether it's worthwhile trying to pursue a surf show of some kind in that town.
The Toronto scene, as Tena points, is probably reasonably well covered, at least as far as the Surf Battle is concerned.
On the other hand, if Freddie could come up with a different angle-- maybe some cross-border thing that might make it different and not something that local promoters & club owners etc might do on their own-- then that' might work, particularly if you hooked up with somebody local, except that there are probably going to be cross-border business and legal issues to contend with, if you want to do it by the book.
It'd be great to get some NY bands, for example, playing up here, and us going down there... but again, I gather it isn't easy getting visas etc, and sneaking in has its risks & problems.
Anyway, whatever happens, it's great that you're thinking of us up here!

Thanks for bringing that up, Rio. I'm sorry that issue wasn't brought up to the Heart Eaters any earlier.

Tena,
My information is that the issue was raised, but there was a misunderstanding.

Thx for that comment about when to do a Montreal show
And for the suggestion about doing one that is NOT "all-surf"
I had a vision of dropping "garage" and "rockabilly" into the mix
Let me ask you,
When do you think would be the ideal time to do this?
I am thinking one-day only, right?
Indoor v outdoor....your thoughts?
Any feedback is most appreciated

I also suggest avoiding holiday weekends. In Toronto, holdiay weekends = exodus north to cottage. Pretty sure Montreal is the same. Now an outdoor show in say, Wasaga Beach (Georgian Bay) on a long weekend would go over well.

I don't think so
It would seem the comments said publicly here, and in private, off-line....doesn't seem like a good idea
There is that other 2-day festival in Toronto, don't know the date....that, too, is another reason to just 'let it be'.
Thx for asking , but.....
I will kick this around with my Program Director DAN COLEMAN who lives in Montreal to see if he is still into doing this, but on another date
