I agree with the three previous guys and thank them for their contributions to the genre!
I remember when "pulp fiction" came out, I was juggling between two feelings: on the one hand I was happy because finally it became easier for me to get records and CD's of what had been my fave genre for 15 years at that point (and trust me, in the Netherlands it was even in Amsterdam, where I lived at the time hysterically hard to find surf related records apart from the general stuff). You were now able to see surf acts live, eg I could finally see Dick Dale live in Paradiso, Amsterdam. Also it became easier for me to explain to ppl what kind of music I loved (you know, it's like the music of Pulp Fiction - they'd know instantly then) - prior to that it was much harder and I was laughed at a lot for loving this strange kind of music in which they didn't even sing.
On the other hand I was a little pissed off because now everyone knew the music and and it became a more general thing - the uniqueness I had felt all through the 80's and early 90's of knowing and loving something that nobody else, or very few knew, ergo it being "mine", was gone. In those days it was a pleasure to meet someone who actually knew what you were talking about. Now every flip-flop bimbo you saw walking by knew about it and it somehow perverted the idea a little. And inevitably you got these Amsterdam types with their big mouths now telling me that I was just a follower of fashion by liking surf instros (since the scene was tiny prior to the movie, I knew just about everyone in the scene at the time - and guess what, I'd never seen these types before, lol). In the end the positive idea won over.
But as to the idea of waves, I concur with ElectricLimnology and his metaphor of it being a stream that just keeps on going. But to honor those who want to clutch on to the wave-idea: I am a first- and second-wave person. So only from the early 1960's and early 1980's. Which you should be able to hear back in the Magnatech recordings. Nevertheless I covered the Nebula's "Supernova" on my last album because it's in my top 5 of best surf tunes ever. So it's all fluid at the end of the day
