+1 on the Zoom but can you trust it for live performance. It's fiddly to setup and a guitar player really needs something he can switch no/off with little use of the brain.

No problems for me on the Zoom for live usage.
Over the past 3 or 4 years I've used it for Surf, Pop/Rock shows and even actual touring.

Cheers,
Jeff

I heard Jeff play through a Zoom (no amp I believe) at a full house at the Scotiabank Centre here (5000+ people), and it sounded great with several of his guitars. Some of it is in the hands, of course!

That's good to hear! I still have my MS-100BT (discontinued) I bought at a generous special offer price. To be honest I was looking for a fast tuner pedal, the Zoom has a really good tuner and a whole bunch more!!!! Cool

Anyone record with a zoom pedal? Obvy we love to turn a choice valve amp up and have it well mic'd up but that's not always an option

I bought my first Zoom for recording guitar, then liked the amp sims and cabinet sims so much that I got the bass-specific model. I don't have any samples to share, but for direct recording, these boxes can go a very long way toward simulating a surf "band" with different guitarists / different rigs.

I can't recommend this enough: since there's no such things as a 'blank patch,' overwrite & rename any existing patch, turn off or remove ALL of the effects "blocks," and then add amp and cab sims and tweak to taste.

Once you find a viable combination there, adding additional effects if needed is a breeze. There are some very fundamental, meat & potatoes tones possible with the Zoom modeling; it's not all bells & whistles.

I'll tell you a secret.
the topanga pedal used in front as a boost is better to my ears than an ep boost ,you get a nice slightly edgy roar just put the
dwell at 9 oclock the mix at 12 tone and volume at max
it's a glorious slight edgy sound.
put it in front unless you use a compressor put it second.
topanga makes an excellent boost slight overdrive sound.
it's called topanga spring reverb by catalinbread.

I second TGI's recommendation for a Rangemaster style treble boost. I actually use one of the overpriced models he alludes to (a Pigdog model called "the driver.")

Yes, in this video I'm using the Zoom G1Xon as the only source of effects, in a direct recording with no amplifier or microphone. The reverb effect is Springs63.

Hi Conrad, That sounds great and really shows how splashy a G1Xon's reverb can get! And the recording quality is amazing.

Would you mind revealing the other effects, amps, and cabs you are using in your G1Xon chain? I would like to see how close I could get to dialing it in on my MS-50G.

Considering the number of effects, the expression pedal, built in rhythms and looper function, the G1Xon is certainly the best bang for the buck available.

Hi, Tim,
Thanks for your kind remarks.
The chain includes COMP compression, TREMOLO tremolo, FD combo amp, TAPE ECHO, and SPRINGS63.

In live performances I get the same tone as on my recordings. I use a bass guitar amp head to drive a neodymium PA speaker and piezo tweeter through a crossover network. The piezo tweeter adds enormously. Few guitar amps have tweeters.

Thanks Rev!
The highlight of that show was getting to meet you in person.
Hopefully I'll see you soon again, looking like 2019 now but who knows.

FWIW to this discussion: I'm re-doing my fly date pedal board (very small) for the first time in years and the MS-50G is on there again.
Using the RC Booster, Compressor (for boost) Tremolo and Reverb models.

Cheers,
Jeff

Any live for theVox Stomplab anyone? Similar, as good or not?

For gigs, I use my Klon clone, the BYOC Silver Pony. Clones or "inspired-by" pedals like the aforementioned Tumnus and Soul Food will shave a bit of bass off, give a nice, refined bump to the mids and range of grit is useful for vintage tones. These pedals are particularly useful when using smaller amps as it helps to reduce speaker flub and the boost to the mids makes it more intelligible (effectively making you louder in the mix if you want). They also can help with larger amps that you want to cook a bit but need to keep the volume low due to volume restrictions.
Disclaimer: a Klon/Klone pedal is an acquired taste. A lot of players buy them on the recommendations of other players but then bring them home and are not inspired. If a player does not gig, then I would not recommend the Klon/Klones. I tend not to use one at home but absolutely love it for live use. I will use it for garage-y instro like Link Wray but do not use it for Astronauts, Lively Ones covers, ect. because I prefer a cleaner tone. I also will use a Kingsley Page tube boost that has a gain knob on it. Lovely break-up/low OD sounds on that!

Totally undetstand shake n stomps approach me groomed above. I've never tried a Klon style pedal but use a modded Boss Blues Driver to add some grit to my Supro amp...it works well loud or quiet and cuts a bit of the boom out of the amp. I'd like to boast that I don't need pedals but I do

Love my Sonic Blue Twanger to push the amp

I good cheap option might be the Caline Pure Sky Overdrive Pedal. These have been alleged to be a Chinese made clone of the Timmy. I cannot attest to whether it is a Timmy clone or not, but I can say it is a very good sounding, transparent mild to moderate OD pedal that also functions very well as a clean boost. I found it also works very well as "an always on" pedal to sweeten up your tone. Seems to be pretty well made for a Chinese clone pedal and you can actually get them for under $27.00 w/ free shipping on Amazon right now.
I'm thinking about getting a Zoom G1 to use as a headphone amp for late night playing. Anybody have any experience how the G1 sounds through headphones?

Squid, I just wanted to say your post was compelling enough to convince me how to spend the balance of Amazon gift cards I got for Christmas, my Zoom G1xon showed up yesterday and I'm having a blast with it, given that I haven't yet even read the manual or tried some of the settings you recommend on another post about this unit. I can tell already that with just a bit of tweaking it will stand up very favorably to my Surfy Bear and vintage 6G15, and so cool to have a cheap portable option!

Which drum track were you using in your Waterfall demo?
