Another great article by Deke Dickerson about Larry Collins with an interesting plot twist for surf guitar fans:

Great article. Deke can write almost as well as he can play.

Great article.
I got to see the Collins Kids about 10 years ago and I admit at the time I didn't know a lot about them, but they were great!!

I enjoyed that. I've known about the Collins Kids for many years. I loved their version "Just Because" and played it often. I remembered hearing that Larry was 12 or 13 when it was recorded and it blew my mind. I'll admit that I'd never heard "Whistle Bait" before, but it is such an odd song written by a teenage kid who may or may not have known what he was saying. Still, it's pretty odd and does have sort of a punk edge to it. Thanks to the age of Youtube, I was finally able to watch some Collins Kids clips to watch Larry hop all over the place like a kid who drank a 2-liter bottle of Coke on top of 3 bags of Skittles. That also blew me away how wild his antics were, especially for the ultra-conservative country crowd. I'll admit that I had a huge crush on Lorrie as well but had never seen her play until, of course, youTube. Attached is Ricky and Lorrie playing "Just Because" on Ozzie and Harriet, where I first caught a glimpse of her outside of photographs. Then the Collins Kids playing the same song on television (which I had never seen as a teen/young adult). Loved those kids! Had I seen these early appearances of Larry like the ones in Deke's article, I think I would have been more influenced by Larry than I was just hearing the records as a kid. Again, I really enjoyed reading the article and it's renewed my interest in Larry Collins.

"The Girl Can't Dance" is pretty punk as well and backed by Link Wray and his Raymen. And as for "Whistle Bait", I used to think it was a girl singing!

Love how Whistle Bait sounds like L7. Big Grin

Skins for The Delstroyers

Always loved their stuff but...Wolfman Jack was not on Mexican radio until the early 60's. That is according to the Wolfman himself (in his autobiography). He was on a small R&B station in Newport News, VA. in 1961, known as Daddy Jules. If you can find this book, it is a great read. Great article on Larry Collins...good job Deje!

That's Deke. Damn Spell check.

Once again, I'm learning great stuff here thank you Deke Dickerson AND surfguitar101 for taking me further down the rabbit hole!

Always one of my favorites. I heard it first on a German comp I bought back in the 90s called Lookey Dookey or something like that. Punk as all hell! Funny how I had to learn about this gem from outside of the country it was recorded in.
