It was pretty much crappy the majority of the week last week when I was down there. I was actually kinda hoping for some fun, kook middle-of-the-summer type waves, but it was mostly mushy, wind-blown, choppy and pretty strong current for this time of year.
It was good to see you though Carol, sorry we were't able to catch your band on Saturday, but we had to bug out early on Sunday.

the surf here went from crappy to really fun to crappy again in a matter of hours yesterday. i got the tail end of fun into the crappy. i surfed today and it was crappy and then the wind killed it. water was nice though.
good to see you paul. our gig was great. really good crowd that stayed until we stopped playing at 1:45AM. we had them dancing, singing along and happy, which are our main objectives. sorry the surf wasn't better for you (it was better down here at our end of the island) but it's nice to get away and this is the place to do it.

Stupid Bro-tards.
Bad yes, but no where near as bad as the riots in
84 or so.
This is why I don't do the SG101 convention
During the same weekend anymore.

I live about an hour away from Torquay, Australia (up the road from Bells Beach). But how often do I get time to surf these days? NEVER!!

So I'm about to embark on a road trip from Seattle to LA from the 7th to the 18th. Chances are I'll be arriving in LA on the 16th and it's about time I finally gave surfing a shot.
Any advice on how to start? Board rentals, instructors, beaches?
REALLY excited to finally do this. It exists out here in the gulf coast but you've REALLY got to seek it out.
edit: and if there's a better spot further up the coast, I'll take it!

Man, that would be excellent but we haven't really planned it out day by day yet. You've planted it my head as an objective though

I would recommend these guys... http://www.malibusurfshack.com/
Really nice people. Your lesson will get you a soft top board, wetsuit and instructor. Its about $75 or $100 an hour I think. Do not try to surf without taking a lesson! You will get slammed and not catch a wave. Plus historic Malibu Surfrider beach is THEE longboard spot where legends were made. The instructor will take you to a spot where you'll be out of harms way.

Ask for a longboard, dude! Easier to catch waves, easier to paddle.
BTW, if you don't already, start doing push-ups daily. Be easier to pop up on the board.

Ha, somebody told me that just this past Tuesday. Good thing I've been doing it for the past few months without any thought of surfing.
Thanks for the advice so far y'all! I'm REALLY excited about this. Though also realistically expecting to be eating it a fair amount.

OT(mildly)Bodyboarding (for a whole host of reasons)works best for me at this life point, lol. Toobs, Milqueblack, BZ are boards of choice. Love being out in the water (even icy Atlantic Ocean waves in the Spring).
Anyway, good luck with the 'board' surfing!

Ha, body boarding I've had down from years in the Gulf of Mexico without many other options. Time to graduate.

East coast in VA has been pretty flat most of this year. So, we got out the 9'2" and tried pulling it behind a boat. 1st time I've ever done this, its actually a lot of fun and does give youi some of the feel of actual surfing. Hardest part is making the transition to standing. (sorry for the jerky video - seems to be the way Photobucket processes it)
