Congrats Ferenc. That is so cool.
Also, NY '79 one of my favorite intros, although not as cool as a Flash of Green.

I think if you don't have alot of these classic songs its really a good way to have a comp of essentials,
but for me its sooooo cool that these songs are on it.

Mermen unto the resplendent amazing california health
Blue Hawaiians Martini Five O sway
Pollo del Mar A Flash of Green The Golden State

Vanduras La Planche In the Dark?
Why don't I know what this is?
Now, Starbucks should sponsor a tour of surf bands to their biggest cafes around the country.

WHOA......
I work for the big green. Years ago (like the 90s), I wrote to them and asked them to do a surf comp, but I never thought they would. I hope this means they'll be playing it in the store so I have something enjoyable to listen to for once.

The Vanduras are a lap/pedal steel lounge type band. Pretty great playing.

Evil? Very good indeed! Choice of songs is eclectic, interesting, not too traditional. But interesting certainly. Hopefully to the caffeinated masses also. Now's the chance to wean them off Justin Timberlake before it's too late.
The Aquavelvets are a somewhat guilty pleasure of mine. So are Laika and the Cosmonauts, for that matter. Not entirely surf. But they have their own thing going on and they go with conviction. Love that.

My sister works at the Starbucks home office. She always sends me lame gifts, like coffee mugs of Seattle, coffee grinders, etc., that she must buy in the lobby gift store. Finally, there's something I can get that I really want! I think the mix is pretty good, a great intro to surf/beach music. Maybe it will turn some from the caffeine masses on to our, um, flavor of music.

The Vanduras are a perfect example of how a Telecaster is "wrong" for "surf" music. And also how screwy that ideal is. It sounds so haunting and ethereal. Like a good Gretsch, it seems perfect for tunes like this. I had already made up my mind to get a Japanese Bigsby-equipped Tele as my next surf guitar. Being reminded of these guys makes me realize I gotta step that up.

I think a tele would sound 'just okay' if it was used on the bridge pickup through a lower wattage fender piggyback that was turned up nice and loud. Never a showman though.

Gotta respectfully disagree about that. The Tele and the Fender Twin, for example, are made for each other. How could the Showman sound that much different? Apologies, though: this is way off-topic. Must be getting tired. We had better move this to another thread. Or honor a previous topic author and resurrect one that surely exists around here somewhere.

I'm checking the playlist in the morning. We usually get that stuff before it's actually out. We launch a new promotion on June 25, so I'm sure this CD coincides with that.

It's the pedal steel player from the Blue Hawaiians. Very cool CD.
Kinda atmospheric and mysterious sounding. If you see it, pick it
up.

Congrats to everyone who got on this comp - it can only be a good thing for the bands/labels involved, as well as the state of surf music in general. There aren't many labels releasing surf music these days, and I'm sure Starbucks will sell a bunch of 'em!

Ferenc, two questions.
Is this on the Starbucks label? I'm assuming it is.
And...
Did you get to choose what song you wanted on the album?

The Vanduras are a perfect example of how a Telecaster is "wrong" for "surf" music.
I've been a Telecaster addict for many years for non-surf stuff and I have three. I would say that the main differences between the tones of a Tele and a Jaguar come from the fact that the Tele strings come over the bridge and pass through the body - making a good Tele a guitar with a quite lot of sustain. However, apart from that they are both a formidable slab of wood with a single coil pickup at the back and the frequency response is quite similar. I would imagine that a Tele with a bigsby would both supply the all important wobble-stick and reduce the angle over the bridge resulting in a pretty surfy sound. I've even used my standard tele on some of my demos when I've been too lazy to go and get the Jag from downstairs and it's sounded fine.
Sorry for returning to wandering off-topic
