Hey Ted! Wow! I so loved that show in Hailey! I reviewed it for a blog I was doing at the time, Ski Cheap and Deep. Then, when I got home, I decided I wanted to learn to play surf guitar. Exclusively. Then, I was in Seattle at my sister's. We were going through a record store bin and I found Satan's Pilgrims Plymouth Rock CD. Wow! I was so excited. It plays on my iPod all the time. Really love "Haunted House of Rock!!!"

Though I've been playing surf for 12+ years with USK, I have yet to see a surf band! We're the only one out here...I gotta get out to the West Coast sometime.

My first surf/instro show was Los Straitjackets in Tempe, Ariz., followed by DD a month or two later, in '04 I think.
But my first concert of any kind was the Beach Boys in 1978, a real concert, not one of their state fair medly shows. I saw them about a dozen times over the next 10 or 15 years, but that first show was the only time I saw the classic lineup of Brian, Carl, Dennis, Mike and Al (and Bruce) onstage together, and in great form. Every other show, someone was missing, for whatever reason. Made me glad I saw them all that first show.

DD in '91 - I was completely blown away.
Was that the show at Slims with the Mermen opening up? I don't remember what year it was, but that's the first time I saw Dick Dale. I remember DD going through all the picks he brought; he was smoking!

The one I consciously remember is seeing The Blue Hawaiians (as an opening band) at The Fillmore in '98 or '99. That opened the floodgates. If you'd told me back then if I'd be playing in two surf bands, and end up going to probably a hundred shows since, I'd have said you're crazy.

The one and the only...
Treble Spankers & Dick Dale, Paradiso Amsterdam.
Have Dick's autograph, missed one of the picks...
Awesome!

Dick Dale in 1997 here in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.
The fun thing is that he played a song he wrote that day and said he would name that Belo Horizonte. Everybody thought he was just being nice and that he problably did it in every city he plays. Some years later, we could see that song in his CD. Really cool for us ![Very Happy Very Happy](/media/smiley/images/icon_biggrin.gif)

For 2 or 3 years after going there, he would always say the story of how he was sitting there, just awe struck by how beautiful that area was, and how he wrote the song.

Jon and the Nightriders 1981, Roxy, Hollywood. I was underage so it was a triumph just to get in. Sounded just like "the Nightrider" from podcast 1. Gives me chills everytime I hear it! Never got sick of Surfbeat '80... Hendrix WAS WRONG!

I've only seen a couple of cover bands thus far, but my "spark" was seeing a local band (in Chapel Hill, NC) called Dom Casual in May of '08, doing a really exceptional cover of Pipeline.

First show was Jim Pash's benefit at Hard Rock Newps. but I mostly went to see dusty's band and didn't pay much attention to the rest of it. Then went to see Slacktone at hb pier summer of '07 and I was hooked. Can I believe it's been less than two years??? What an incredible ride and blessing it's been to meet so many awesome musicians and experience so much about surf music in such a short time. ![Laughing Laughing](/media/smiley/images/icon_lol.gif)

Although not really classed a "Surf" band, I seen the Ventures and ended up chatting with Wilson and Bogle between their sets. Bascially said "hi" to Nokie and Mel but Wilson and Bogle were the real personable ones.
Second band was Jan & Dean and I got to sing "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena" with them...

It was either Satan's Pilgrims or Man or Astroman? about 1995 (I think?).

Upon viewing this thread i came to the sad realization that ive never seen a surf show. The closest ive come was seeing the ventures last year in Quebec.

I hate this thread.
Still waiting for my first instro surf show.
It will probably be LSJ since they tour fairly extensively (although not where I live).

could not have said it better myself, thanks Brian.
I would not want my 1st show to be a LSJ's show.
just saying.
