Enduring tunes that folks who are not surf aficionados love. Wipeout gets name-checked anytime I have to explain what surf music is and offer an example. Reaction? "ooooh, ok....I see what you mean!"
Never fails to get a big, positive reaction and not in the same, tired way when a covers band plays "Brown Eyed Girl". It is the ultimate drummer audition song for when we've looked for fill-in drummers.
Storm Surf is one of my fav surf tunes and it is our our setlist for our gig this week. Yet another Surfaris song that non-surf aficionados seem to latch onto, in my experience.

I clicked on this because it came up again. Sorry it didn't specify in the header that he died.
I, for one, always listened to the Surfaris as a kid because my dad's record collection was huge and I used to raid it from time to time. I started with the Surfaris and then discovered the Chantays, the Ventures, the Lively Ones, Bob Vaught and the Renegades (or Renegaids, yes, the record had both spellings on it), and the Fireballs. But I started with the Surfaris because they had this really cool intro and drum beat to a song called Wipeout. It was THAT band that sold me and got me interested in surf.
RIP Jim Fuller. I agree what another member posted. There needs to be something for Jim and the Surfaris at the convention.

I actually think Wipeout itself gets a bad rap in the surf community. It's primitive, wild, loud, and stupid. That's pretty essential rock & roll to me.

Thanks to Chris for giving this thread a well-deserved kick in the rear! I'm currently alone at home, working and cranking the Surfaris! I must admit, to my shame, that it's been years since I've listened to the Surfaris, but that has been my loss. Their legacy goes far beyond Wipe Out, as many have discussed above, and listening to them now to my ears they really sound like an archetypal surf band. And they truly were a band - it wasn't about any of the individuals (though Ron Wilson WAS without a doubt one of the best first-wave drummers!), it was about the songs and each member's contributions to the songs. This is where I really see the huge influence they've had on Satan's Pilgrims, the most obvious inheritors of the Surfaris' legacy. Anyway, I'm getting hi-fallutin', it's easy for me, and that's really wrong when talking about the Surfaris! Just an awesome freakin' band, with so many fantastic songs: Point Panic, Similau, Surfaris Stomp, Scatter Shield, Burnin' Rubber, Dune Buggy, Big Surge, Storm Surf, Murphy the Surfie (such a great cover of an awesome tune by the Aussie band the Joy Boys), Hot Rod Graveyard. AND let's not forget all the fantastic vocal tracks they recorded with Wilson on vocals - they were as good as the Hondells and the SuperStocks in that regard (even though sometimes it was just Wilson represented on these songs, with a studio band doing the recording instead).
I met Jim Fuller only once, and very, very briefly. The Surfaris (at that point featuring Paul Johnson, Dusty Watson, and Ron Eglit, with Fuller the only remaining original member) recorded their video segment for the Sound of the Surf documentary right after the Madeira in a warehouse in SoCal back in '08, two days after the first SG101 convention. Fuller struck me as a very shy and low-key guy, so I didn't want to impose on him. Now I wish I had taken the opportunity to talk to him just a bit more.
It's very sad how many first-wave surf musicians are passing all of a sudden. I hope we can celebrate all the ones that are still with us. A tribute to the Surfaris at the convention would be wonderful - can I nominate Satan's Pilgrims? C'mon, Ted, you guys already play enough tracks by them, you could do a full Surfaris set with no problem at all!  You'll already be on the west coast around that time - how about a side-trek to SoCal?

Here's something that maybe lot of surf music fans aren't aware of: the Surfaris recorded a live album in '81, which is actually quite good!

Great Posts Ivan! Once again, you said exactly what I've tried to say, only much better.
That live album IS good! I bought it so long ago, 1981 seemed recent. But, it's Kelly Lammers on lead guitar. Jim Fuller played bass then.

Here's a pic of the band from about 1981 or so. Bob Berryhill, Jim Fuller, and Kelly Lammers. I can't name the drummer, it doesn't look like Don Murray, but it might be. This time period might be the reason some surf bands still wear Hawaiian shirts.

The Surfaris live in 2003 - bad quality video, but it shows Jim Fuller playing with the band. The band here has Jim Pash on lead guitar (Pash passed away in '05) and Paul Johnson on rhythm.

Thanks Ivan! They were obviously a model for us for the reasons stated above.

I wish we could, that would be so much fun and we'd be honored. Unfortunately, (I won't bother you with the deatails) but we were already on board to come this year, but then Tiki Oasis changed their weekend, causing Jeff to change the weekend of the convention to a weekend that makes it impossible for us to come. We also turned down an invite to play Tiki Oasis since our first loyalty was to SG101. Believe me, if there was any way to make it happen, we would, but in the words of The Who, it's a legal matter, baby...
