Ain't a Strat & Showman like bacon n' eggs? Sure, there are substitutes, but when you really want to play surf with the very best gear, accept no substitutes-gotta be a Strat.

Reminds me of a post about surf guitar elsewhere (and elsewhen) - "You can play any guitar you want, as long as it's a Jazzmaster in Olympic White with a tortoise shell pickguard."

Fender Strat, Jazzmaster, Jag, Gibson, whatever, it is all about the tone a player is seeking. Tone is in the ear of the beholder. My tone may be great to me, but others may not like it.

Sometime back I got involved in a discussion about round wound v flat wound strings, arguing I would never use FW's. Today, they are on my Strat; best sound I ever heard. But then, I am playing a 60 or 61 HT Strat which may be closer to a Teles sound than a Strat.

I just made my previous post to stir the pot.

I wish I could find that picture of one of the Challengers tuning his SG Les Paul pre show out behind the Hollywood Bowl.

It's funny:
The Ventures (instro band) record one surf album = not a surf band.
The Astronauts (frat rock) record one surf album = quintessential surf band
