Permalink Any classic surf bands of the 60s not use fenders?

Just curious.

Guitarist for Black Valley Moon & Down By Law

Pipeline by the Chantays was not recorded using Fender Guitars.

Jeff(bigtikidude)

Checkout Bob Dalley's Surfin' Guitars book for lots of photos of bands from the 60's. There are a lot of Fenders, but you also see a Mosrite or two, and some oddball stuff.

This is an ugly chapter in surf music history that we prefer not to revisit. Thanks for opening up old wounds.

Do bass guitars count as guitars?

I know I'll get knocked down for this, but the Ventures didn't use Fender gear exclusively.

Happy Sunsets!

Original Surfaris had one Fender but I think Larry Weed played something else. Look in Surfin Guitars by Bob Dalley. Tons of the first wave bands had at least one non-Fender.

Ted, I believe Larry Weed is only shown with a Strat and a Jazzmaster in the couple of the Original Surfaris photos I've seen.

Tommy Nunes of the Sentinals is also shown with a Strat in some photos, so he was definitely not exclusively a Gretsch guy. Who knows what these guys used to record??

I wish I could find that picture of one of the Challengers tuning his SG Les Paul pre show out behind the Hollywood Bowl.

It's funny:
The Ventures (instro band) record one surf album = not a surf band.
The Astronauts (frat rock) record one surf album = quintessential surf band

I think that picture you are thinking of is one of Eddie & The Showmen. I don't have time to hunt it down right now but I think it is in that thread about the Hollywood Bowl concert recording that came to light...?

I can't resist this answer, but it is made to stir the pot, kind of tongue in cheek, so don't bite back with too much tone.

Ain't a Strat & Showman like bacon n' eggs? Sure, there are substitutes, but when you really want to play surf with the very best gear, accept no substitutes-gotta be a Strat.

RUN FOR COVER-INCOMING.

Let me run for cover on this post.

I recall Johnny Fortune played a big hollow body. He was probably the most skilled musician during the First Wave.

I remember he once showed up at a battle of the bands at a Pomona or nearby armory with a Jazzmaster or Jag in hand but did not like the feel or tone. He played so well that Fender gave him that guitar. We were all envious of both his playing skills as well as getting a free guitar.

Reminds me of a post about surf guitar elsewhere (and elsewhen) - "You can play any guitar you want, as long as it's a Jazzmaster in Olympic White with a tortoise shell pickguard."
