Read that Danny won the Strat - way cool! Thumbs Up

Who was the lucky "Alfredo-approved" Eastwood winner? Cool

Damn, I'm bad at remembering names.
But I'm pretty sure somebody got his pic.

Thanks everybody! I know I was awarded a guitar last year, so this seems a bit weird that I won this. If it was another Jazzmaster I would have let them pick another winner, but I've been wanting a decent Strat for a long time. Tell you what, I promise next year I won't buy a raffle ticket Smile

Manoman, talk about Instant Karma! I'm so happy you won that Strat! Congrats.

Believe it or not, this was our theme song for the TMen road trip last weekend. Turned out to be a perfect song for Danny.

Hi everyone, I just got my strat back from my guitar tech. I think I'll play it at tonight's gig with Davie Allan. I had the guitar set up the way my hero Ivan does, with Roto Purples (12's). However I also asked the tech to remove the top volume knob and move it to the 2nd hole, and then install a micro switch in the bottom hole to turn on the neck pickup. This allows me to go from bridge only to bridge + neck when the pickup selector is at the bottom. I can also get all 3 pickups at the 4th position, but that doesn't seem very useful.

I found it interesting that in order to get the guitar to intonate with .12's, my tech had to put a smaller screw and shorter spring on the low E saddle as it had to be pulled back so much.

Something else my tech did was hold the pickups quite a bit away from the strings. He feels the magnets really impact the tuning of the guitar and Fenders specs are too close. I'm willing to go with it for a while, they sound pretty good to me so far. A tad bright, but this is my first time with new roundwounds in years, so I expect they'll dull over time to a sweet medium.

Behind my guitar is my brand new (as in received yesterday) Quilter Steelaire. Some of you know that I donated my blonde bandmaster to Ferenc for his award, with the plan to replace it with this Steelaire. I loved my MP200 and when I borrowed one from Adrian of Fascinating Creatures of the Deep, I felt this was even better, with the 15" speaker. Screaming loud, but great at low levels too. A tiny bit sterile when played straight, but with my EP-Pre and/or Nocturne Dyno Brain in front of it, there's lots of warm character in the tone. Which I do on my '61 Bandmaster as well.

Thanks again to Paul Coltsurf, BTD, Jonpaul, Kristena, and everyone involved in putting together our yearly convention. You guys are the very best!!!

I just practiced with my new Steelaire, and I'm going to leave my Fender at home and bring it instead. It really sounds just killer to my ears.

There's a great option on this amp for surf guitarists. The footswitch has a "boost" setting, but it's not a volume boost, it's a treble boost. I have a couple songs where I like to go to super drip, but it's always been a challenge balancing that with the rest of the song that doesn't need all that reverb or vise versa. A perfect example is Hot Doggin' by The Astronauts. As most of us know, the drip resides in the higher frequencies, thus a treble boost really brings it out, and then allows me to drop right back to my normal tone.

Fantastic, Danny!! The Grand Experiment!! Here's hoping it all works out! It's gonna be hard to process you with a Strat, and I suspect it'll be more than a bit of an adjustment to get used to it, but I do hope you enjoy the guitar. It really is a GREAT one!

Have a fantastic show tonight, too!

My tech has had to do this a few times, too.

There are guys on SG101 (and presumably elsewhere) that swear by low-set pickups. Personally, I don't get it. I prefer them set normally, since they don't have as much output if they're set too low - and I do like output. Strat pickups may impact the tuning and the vibration of thin strings, but 12s? I doubt it. Anyway, I've always had my pickups set up at the medium height, and they sound pretty damn good to me. I guess you can experiment and see what works better for you.

Can't wait to hear you through that amp. I did a quick view of the Quilter vid on this amp & there's alot going on. I wonder what Eminence calls this 15" Neo in their regular product line...

Glad you're enjoying the Strat!
Smile

Edit to add: Caught the resurrected Steelaire thread in the Gear section.
